This photograph of Sir Paul McCartney in a dressing gown playing with his young children, Stella and James, in the garden of a Scottish cottage in 1982 is one of several intimate family portraits taken by the late Linda McCartney, which will form the centrepiece of an exhibition of her photographs to mark the 10th anniversary of her death.

Sir Paul McCartney, currently going through acrimonious divorce proceedings from his second wife, has spent the past three years putting together the show, handpicking and approving 30 images, many of them never seen in public, taken by his first wife, a professional photographer.

The images spanned her career as a professional photographer from the 1960s up until her death from cancer in April 1998.

The exhibition organisers refused to give full details of the images chosen, but one is said to be a tragic and “ghostly” self-portrait by Linda a few months before her death.

She took it in the London studio of the artist Francis Bacon.

It shows a reflection of herself, looking pale and with short hair, in a broken mirror with an empty sofa and a death mask of William Blake close by.

Linda commenced her career as a rock photographer and the exhibition, the first major show of her work held in the UK, will include several portraits of her most famous subjects - John Lennon, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel, Sir Mick Jagger, Janis Joplin and the artists Gilbert and George.

Sir Paul said: “An exhibition presenting the range of Linda’s photographic work is long overdue, so I’m obviously pleased that this show is happening.

“The photographs not only illustrate her incredible talent as an artist, but as someone who was very much connected to the culture of the times and wasn’t afraid to challenge herself or her subject.”

The exhibition opens on April 24 at the James Hayman Gallery in London. Limited edition prints will be for sale.
