No LT? No Rivers? No problem: Undermanned Chargers stun Colts 28-24
San Diego Union-Tribune ^ | 1:24 p.m. January 13, 2008 | Barry Wilner (ASSOCIATED PRESS)

INDIANAPOLIS – Even without LaDainian Tomlinson and Philip Rivers, the Chargers made sure the Indianapolis Colts won't repeat as Super Bowl champions.

Now San Diego must make sure it doesn't repeat its last performance at New England.

That will be especially difficult without an injured L.T., who departed in the first half with a bruised left knee, and starting quarterback Rivers, who went out in the third quarter with a damaged right knee in the Chargers' stunning 28-24 victory Sunday.

With Billy Volek at quarterback and Michael Turner as the main runner, San Diego went 78 yards on eight plays, with Volek sneaking in from the 1 with 4:50 remaining for the lead. The Chargers' big-play defense then held on downs at its 7, and stopped Indy again in the final moments to preserve their eighth straight win.

To make it nine in a row and advance to their second Super Bowl – the other was a loss to San Francisco after the 1994 season – the Chargers will need all the resourcefulness they showed at Indianapolis. Being undermanned against undefeated New England hardly is an enticing prospect.

Still, with All-Pro cornerback Antonio Cromartie getting an interception and fumble recovery, and linebackers Shawne Merriman and Shaun Phillips plaguing Peyton Manning, the Chargers showed they have the ability to throw off any offense. Maybe even the most prolific attack in NFL history.

The Chargers didn't come close against the Patriots in Week 2, falling 38-14. That was the beginning of a slide to 5-5 for San Diego, but the Chargers (13-5) are rolling now.

Well, wish him well for me.

I was much more relaxed this time. I felt that we had done well to get here considering the upheaval after Schottenheimer got canned and after we played so abysmally the first half of the season.

I felt that if the Chargers played hard and didn't make mistakes, they could hold our heads high. I've been pretty hard on them this season, but I really tip my hat to them. They have a lot to be proud of.

In the fourth quarter, there were 3 major penalties in a row. The first one, an interference call on the Chargers, was invisible. Then we got the make-up call against the Colts, and finally a real penalty against the Chargers.

Cromartie's return for a touchdown that was negated by a holding penalty was one of the worst calls I've seen in a long time.

The PI call on Florence later in the 2nd half was the 2nd worst call.

Those officials should be put out to pasture. That could have cost the Chargers the game.

Same thing happened to the Chargers last year, come to think of it. Good point...maybe they lose focus a little bit. Good point, although it sure didn’t hurt the Patriots.

Free Republic isn’t really the place to talk smack about sports

You're absolutely right!

Posters should really stick to the topics that FR is known for world wide.....

American Idol, hot looking teachers that molest teenage boys, Spears, Lohan and the fashions worn at the Academy Awards!

I will.

Congrats! It was fun last year having the Colts go to the show, but this year, they just didn't have it.

they were banged up for a lot of the year. we're going into New England pretty banged up. Finished the game without LT, Rivers or Gates.

We had Billy Volek in who, frankly, is awful. In fact, awful would be an improvement.

Being a lifetime Chargers fan, I was happy not to have a Manning on our team.Rivers has heart and the rest of the team came to win today. As for New England we have beat them at home before so everyone will be watching to see what happens. As for me the Chargers will prevail against all foes this year.Way to go Norv and the whole Chargers team !!!!!

we don’t do perfect. We do cardiac arrest. There are times when the Chargers can give you a heart attack.

I just want us to “show up” in New England. Plus, we have a little “motivation”.

Hats off to the Chargers for showing a lot of character. Hopefully we have not seen the last of Mr. Dungy, perhaps the preeminent class act coach of long standing in the league.
