No LT? No Rivers? No problem: Undermanned Chargers stun Colts 28-24
San Diego Union-Tribune ^ | 1:24 p.m. January 13, 2008 | Barry Wilner (ASSOCIATED PRESS)

INDIANAPOLIS – Even without LaDainian Tomlinson and Philip Rivers, the Chargers made sure the Indianapolis Colts won't repeat as Super Bowl champions.

Now San Diego must make sure it doesn't repeat its last performance at New England.

That will be especially difficult without an injured L.T., who departed in the first half with a bruised left knee, and starting quarterback Rivers, who went out in the third quarter with a damaged right knee in the Chargers' stunning 28-24 victory Sunday.

With Billy Volek at quarterback and Michael Turner as the main runner, San Diego went 78 yards on eight plays, with Volek sneaking in from the 1 with 4:50 remaining for the lead. The Chargers' big-play defense then held on downs at its 7, and stopped Indy again in the final moments to preserve their eighth straight win.

To make it nine in a row and advance to their second Super Bowl – the other was a loss to San Francisco after the 1994 season – the Chargers will need all the resourcefulness they showed at Indianapolis. Being undermanned against undefeated New England hardly is an enticing prospect.

Still, with All-Pro cornerback Antonio Cromartie getting an interception and fumble recovery, and linebackers Shawne Merriman and Shaun Phillips plaguing Peyton Manning, the Chargers showed they have the ability to throw off any offense. Maybe even the most prolific attack in NFL history.

The Chargers didn't come close against the Patriots in Week 2, falling 38-14. That was the beginning of a slide to 5-5 for San Diego, but the Chargers (13-5) are rolling now.

we’re having a similar debate here in San Diego. Chargers are threatening to move...etc, etc. But in the meantime, they’re ours.

Wow. Giants ahead of the Cowboys 7 zip. I dare hope for the trifecta... Chargers Win, Cowboys lose, Raiders are at home watching.

I for one am not outraged or annoyed, or even frothing at the mouth, because you posted a thread about championship football game. So, even though some may be irate and pounding their keys in protest, I found it an enjoyable break between threads pounding on Pat Buchanan (for advocating that we close our Southern border) and the threads cheering swat teams removing children from their parents because social services wants them to go for a doctor visit.

well there you are. The definitive word, albeit ambiguous.

Your better off with Rivers. He has the winning spirit that Eli will never have.

I guess I should have been more clear. Sorry about that. Let me give it another try....

Rivers is maturing .. the comment has been made that he's a football player that happens to be a quarterback. He's tough kid...all 6'5" of him.

Eli is a primadonna and strikes me as a bit of a whiner.

His big brother though is a man. Got to give him credit.

BTW, the play-by-play guys here today were screaming about the officiating. Boomer Esiason also said it was horrible.

I'm just happy that any talk of a "Manning Bowl" is kaput for another year. I can't put a finger on what irritates me so much about the Mannings. Maybe it's the dopey commercials they do or maybe it's the way that "soccer dad from hell" Archie interfered with the NFL draft to make sure his little Eli went to a big-market team.

Anyway, at least Archie is sitting home getting ingestion after seeing his "boys" play today.

He’s feeling a bit better. He had to suffer through me yelling at the Colts. I am kind of relieved that it’s over. I really, really hate the Patriots.

it was. The Chargers played hard throughout and have a lot to be proud of.

Very different to previous years where they play 30 minutes of football and spend the remaining 30 minutes running around looking like the Keystone Kops.

I hear that. Archie did behave like a jerk. Of course, Eli didn’t have the stones to tell his Dad to chill. Peyton stayed out of it, but there is a certain satisfaction in handing it to Daddy Manning.

I agree with Boomer. At least in the first half the refs were taking the game out of the players hands.
