I agree. Either she was really trusting of his "stories", willfully blind, or knew what was going on.

I think I've focused too much on how he saved the body for that first burn the neighbor mentions on the 23rd. He didn't. He probably didn't burn her body for very long, and did it on either the 14th or the 15th. First he dug a grave. Then he burnt the body using the fence pieces on top. Some of the fence pieces could have fallen down already, as rickety as it looked. They would have let off some smell themselves to cover up the smell of the body burning.

I think he was only trying to destroy any forensic evidence, not cremate her. He threw some dirt on top and then come up with a plan to build a firepit to make it look more natural. Nobody would think to look there if sheriff's came a calling in a few days.

Wonder where he moved the rest of the dirt? I think by digging the hole and burning her pretty quickly, the wife had to have know something was going on.
