Is the wife the witness who gave investigators the crowbar?

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. — Authorities investigating the beating death of a 20-year-old pregnant Marine have recovered what may be the murder weapon.

Onslow County sheriff’s Captain Rick Sutherland said Thursday that a witness gave investigators at item that could have been used to kill Lance Corporal Maria Lauterbach. Sutherland declined to say who gave police the item last weekend and what it was.

An autopsy determined Lauterbach died of blunt force trauma to the head.

Wow. I assumed they had found it in his truck, but a witness gave a possible murder weapon to investigators? Who else could it be? Why would he give a murder weapon to anyone else for "safekeeping" vs. just tossing it out somewhere. This guy is just not a smart criminal.

A “witness” gave it to them? Just now?? If it’s the wife, it almost seems as though she is slowly feeding evidence to the authorities—why the delay(s)?
