Golf Channel Anchor Kelly Tilghman Says Young Golfers Should 'Lynch Tiger Woods'

The woman you see in the photo here caddying for Arnold Palmer is Kelly Tilghman, a former college golfer at Duke who now is play-by-play announcer for The Golf Channel's PGA Tour broadcasts.

Tilghman made a shocking comment during Friday's telecast of the PGA Tour's opening event. She said -- on the air -- that today's young players should "lynch Tiger Woods in a back alley."

What was Tilghman thinking? Who knows. It's not entirely clear what point Tilghman was trying to make with what she apparently thought was a joke, but she may have been trying to say that the only chance today's young players will ever have of overtaking Woods as the No. 1 golfer in the world is to hurt him. Hilarious.

According to New York's Newsday, a spokesman for the Golf Channel said Tilghman apologized during Sunday's broadcast and has "reached out to Woods' representatives to express her regrets for the comments."

Apologizing and reaching out is better than nothing, but it's rather surprising that the apology took two days and that in the era of Don Imus, so little attention has been paid to this comment. It's hard to understand how a person who would use such a poor choice of words is in the broadcasting business.

That’s not a recent photo of Mrs Tiger. I saw her briefly on the last telecast of the year (the FedEx finale) and she was really broad of beam. Hope she’s working off the baby fat.

“There are only 34 Rules Of Golf.
Email me if you want on the Golf Ping List:”

Number one rule of golf to me: Have fun.
Number two rule of golf to me: Get exercise (avoid carts)
Please add me to that ping list.

from Michael Hiestand at USA Today Sports:

Whoa:

Just days into the New Year and there's a front-runner for TV sports' Gaffe-of-the-Year honors.

Kelly Tilghman, lead announcer on The Golf Channel, was chatting on-air Friday with analyst Nick Faldo, on coverage of the Mercedes-Benz Championship about how young stars might stand a chance against Tiger Woods. Tilghman, who played on Duke's golf team, suggested they "lynch him in a back alley."

Charming. Tilghman didn't apologize on-air until Sunday. Whether she was intentionally trying to get fired is unclear since, said Golf Channel spokesman Dan Higgins, she doesn't want to discuss what she was thinking — but issued a statement Tuesday apologizing for her "poorly-chosen word." Mark Steinberg, Woods' agent, said Tuesday it was "a complete non-issue." Said Higgins on whether Tilghman will keep her Golf Channel job: "As of now, yes."

From your last comment, are you really sure about that?

that today's young players should "lynch Tiger Woods in a back alley."

Could it be that perhaps Ms. Tilghman doesn't even recognize Mr. Woods as being a black golfer and was merely embellishing Faldo's comment which implied that the only way today's youth could possibly beat the Tiger is after they mug him?

Could it be that the writer of the article, as well as all the other libs in this country are the closet racists who do recognize the color differences in people and are the first to jump on the wagon to point out to the alleged target how he/she SHOULD have been dissed by any such comment?

Its like that proverbial tree that falls in the woods. If Tiger Woods didn't personally hear her comment, should he be offended? Or should he be offended at the idiot who chose to make a story out of it?

You bring up good points. I haven't read the transcript nor seen the program in question. Faldo can provoke but Kelly's uncomfortable right now.

Previous post indicates Kelly's a carpetmuncher. Have CM's ever been lynched? That's the question I'd ask her, mano-a-mano.

As mentioned on another thread, they've been friends for a number of years and both Nike , Tiger and the gal have blown this off..............

So forget the fact that Nike and Tiger have no problem with what she said, her problem is now with those who think that Tiger should be offended........

I hate these writers who try to stirr up crap where there is no crap to be found and the only outcome from something like this is their career being destroyed.........

Appaently this junior birdman of a sports writer didn't get the followup from Tiger. He likes Kelly, has a lot of respect for her, considers her a good friend, sees absolutely "unambiguously no malice" whatsoever in her comment, but rather a form of compliment, and in Tiger's words, this is "a nonstory. Case closed."

When she went to apologize to Tiger personally, he laughed and said "What for?"

Did Tiger say he was black?

Tiger has said, "I'm not Black." To call himself Black would be to disrespect his mother (who is white or mixed asian). He has rejected all the "first Black this and that" accolades the race whores try to heap upon him, just for this reason. Tiger has his act together.

I'm thinking some of the lack of attention may be due to Tiger being highly successful and not as likely to garner as much PC sympathy as some stripper at Duke or lady basketball player at Rutgers. Probably not worth the time for the Rev Al to intervene.

Not mean-spirited in this case, imo. But in very, very poor taste.

Well, I don't know who appointed you the golf god of good taste but you're getting carried away. Make some tea. Have a cookie. Hold your water till you calm down a bit.

Tiger didn't give a sh*t, why should you? Or the congenial retards of the sports media?

The statement from Tiger's agent has been on Yahoo News all day. My quotes were from a radio news report so they are not quite exact but close enough to reflect that this whole thread has been a Jerry Seinfeld "Show about nothing."
