On those lines, I recommend The Origins of Pagan and Christian Beliefs, by Edward Carpenter. It was published in 1920-and when I read the reprint, I was stunned-it's like the ur-text for every single new age belief/philosophy I've run across since the 1980s! When it gets to the vision of a world united under a single government and single unified religion, it gets creepy.
