Well, in a few hours, a few LSU folks will recall with dread the name Greg Frey. Yep, the Buckeye quarterback no one remembers but die-hard Buckeye and LSU fans. The quarterback who led the team to one of the most spectacular comebacks ever witnessed at Ohio Stadium.
As Wikipedia puts it: On September 24, 1988, he rallied Ohio State from a 33-20 deficit in the final four minutes for a 36-33 victory over the ninth-ranked LSU Tigers.
I was at that game in the shoe, urging all the fans who were leaving early to stay put. It was gratifying to see them pour back in as the miracle comeback unfolded. When Bobby Olive made that flying catch in the end zone for the win, I distinctly remember sharing overwhelmingly jubilant joy with thousands of other Buckeyes around me.
The LSU fans who shuffled back to their cars were morose indeed .... it's a long long drive to Louisiana from Ohio. These same fans are now hoping for a dose of that gloom to be heaped upon the carloads of Bucknuts on their way back home from the Dome tonight.
I have some advice for Tiger fans: don't buy the extra beer for the party after the game. The spirit of Greg Frey is with us still.
OSU over Tigers, 24-21.
Go Bucks
I still carry a buckeye from a tree near Mirror Lake in my pocket.
I feel he should not have taken the job before the season (including bowl games) was over.
Congratulations to Coach Stewart, I didn’t hear he took the position. Glad the search committee offered it to him.
By the way, Go Buckeyes.
It is a shame but the truth: nice can be uncommon up north. We're proud of mean football, especially when we win, but no one ever says "Ohio!! The Heart of Midwestern Hospitality." An old woman in Lafayette once told me that that up north, no one cares how far you go up, as long as you don't get too close, while down south, no one cares how close you get, as long as you don't get too far up. Too often I have found this to be true, yet I have to admit, the Buckeye state would benefit greatly if a bunch of coon rear ends decided to move up there and show folks what real cooking and real partying looked like.
Talk about disemboweling. Tulsa did just that last night to Bowling Green SU. 63-7. Now that’s disemboweling someone.
I recall the hemlocks more vividly myself .... in winter they were unreal looking.
I recently visited the campus again, and walked by a male student reading a comic book. It was an Arabic comic book, and appeared to be of a certain kind of theme, but I can’t be sure. All I recall feeling was that Mirror Lake and Arabic Comic Books seemed an impossible juxtaposition while I was there.
USC? A team that beat only 2 teams with a winning record during the regular season? A team that lost to Stanford? Injuries are no excuse. They weren’t for any other team.
The BCS got it right.
I confess I haven’t been online much, and wasn’t aware of GOP R’s activity, but I couldn’t resist getting a head start - if he wants to start another one, I won’t be offended. The more, the merrier.
Yeah, but if you carry hemlock around in your pocket, people will think you're a LSU fan on game day...
Sorry, but this game does decide the best 2007 team. Unless your a fan of some overrated Pac-10, bIG 12, or Big East team.
GO BUCKS! TBDBITL
Oops. TDs.
LOL!
Freudian slip? i hear some of the cheerleaders really get around. ;-)
Thanks in advance.
Best wishes for the OSU Buckeyes in the Bowl Championship against LSU. :)
Just glad my Jayhawks did not embarrass themselves the other night.
This night is OSU’s chance to realize redemption after last year.
Go OSU!!!!
KU was truly a suprise Orange Bowl game winner.
If WVU did not lose to Pitt, they would be in the Bowl Champiosnhip. But at least they won the Fiesta Bowl. :)
