The “little ice age” was found to coincide with an almost total absence of sunspots. Greenwich observatory, during the 1600s, kept detailed notes and sketches on solar observations at that time. It was extraordinarily well done and demonstrates that one doesn’t have to possess high tech to be detail minded and observant.
