EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) - With one mighty heave, Tom Brady and Randy Moss took care of the record books. Now it's down to business for the unbeaten New England Patriots: stamping themselves as the greatest team in NFL history.
The Patriots completed a perfect if somewhat joyless journey through the regular season Saturday night, finishing with a remarkable 16-0 record following a thrilling 38-35 comeback victory over the New York Giants.
New England became the first NFL team since the 1972 Dolphins to win every game on the schedule, and that one was only 14-0. This victory required a comeback from a 12-point deficit engineered by the brilliant Brady, and smashed the Patriots' league mark for consecutive victories.
Validation of their inexorable march through the season can only come by adding a Super Bowl championship, their fourth of the decade. Do that and there'll be no challenge to their spot at the top.
It would have been best for them to get the record without any mitigation caused by questioning of it, but on the other hand they may not have gotten to 16-0 without it.
Might be willing to make a dollar bet right now that every sports journal covering the Patriots' win will have a little sidebar mentioning the cheating scandal.
Ha Ha!!!!!!!!!!!
Great football game! G-Men played their very best and it wasn’t enough. There are those in this city who knew how good Coach Bill was 15 years ago.
Going back to Randy after the drop was the play of the game.
Mercury Morris. Time to shut your effing mouth. O.K.?
You sound "cheated" yourself. That all occurred in the first game of the season. How would you account for the other 15 wins. Surely the teams all changed their signs.
It was a fabulous game tonight and the Giants played hard and did darn well.
Hats off to Brady the Magnificent and Randy Moss for breaking the records.
TAINTED.
the Pats play with the refs in their pockets....the refs go out of their way to penalize other teams and just kinda, sorta, "miss" what the Pats do....
Not one whisper about the cheating scandal.
If they continue and win out, it won't even be in the footnotes. And it's not because "us immoral and uncaring people" turn our heads, it's simply because this is a great team and what Belichick did was in consequential in any of their wins.
Sorry about that......it simply is. You should stop the sour grapes at some time, maybe now's a good time for that........
I saw just the opposite. I saw Rodney Harrington get roughed up with a personal foul, and nary a flag was thrown. The next play Rodney answered in kind and a 15 yard penalty was given against the Pats. Two wrongs don’t make a right, but that foul against Harrison was so obvious that I wondered if the refs were on a coffee break.
The cheating went on for several years. They just finally got caught in the first game this year. The advantage was huge--like being in the opposing team's defensive huddle before every play.
And you can't tell me Brady didn't know about this.
Tainted.
Congratulations, though.
Packers fan here giving congrats on a great season.
Remember the 2001 Mariners? The won 116 games, tying a major-league record. They lost in the first round of the playoffs. Nobody remembers them.
Now, the 114-win 1998 Yankees are considered a great team. They won the whole thing (going 11-2 in the three rounds of the playoffs.)
The Patriots have won several games, including tonight by precarious margins. They look like they could hve trouble making it through the playoffs. If that’s the case, they will be remembered much the way the 2001 Mariners are.
Unfortunately for you, it seems to be stuck in your mind forever............and the ten other sourpusses who can't get over the fact that a great sporting record was just accomplished by a great team.
Hint: Get over it........
So do I. And Belicheck too.
And remember the scandal that erupted after the Jets game.
You can't take away their talent and their working together as a team, both offense and defense. They did what they had to do and they made it a perfect 16-0 season.
Tom Brady will go down in history as one of the greatest Quarterbacks in the history of football. That's a fact.
Maybe had he been on your team, you would feel differently.
Finally someone posts the real “meat” of the matter.
See? That's what I meant when I said "It would have been best for them to get the record without any mitigation caused by questioning of it".
Every time the record gets brought up around anyone who isn't a diehard Patriots fan, the cheating will be discussed. Same thing with Barry Bonds fans. Sad it's that way, really.
Um, no. That's an opinion.
Here is a fact: The Patriots cheated.
There's a whole bunch of baseball superstars saying the same thing about human growth hormone.
I was only talking to the morons who believe your tripe. As I said earlier to you, not one mention of it on any of the hour long shows. Not one. Nor will there be one mention of it if they win out.
Grow up and get over it. It's just not important. The only importance is how do you get the asterisk and pettiness out of your own head before it makes you any more of a sourpuss.
