High quality opensource for windows
The Opendisc ^ | recently | Opendisc

Posted on 12/27/2007 5:12:29 PM PST by xcamel

The inaugural version of OpenDisc has hit the streets! Featuring major updates for FileZilla and OpenOffice, and new versions of Blender, ClamWin, Firefox, Pidgin and WinSCP. Also by popular demand the Tux Paint stamps package makes a return to the disc. As per usual printable disc covers and labels are included, but if you’d like to view them online simply visit the cover art section.

Most importantly there are five new programs on OpenDisc 07.10, three of which were added due user suggestion; Dia, GnuCash and the ever-popular VLC are now featured, as is the streamlined Sumatra PDF and TrueCrypt.

My secret website sucker has been exposed!

Actually, I tried it out on one site in particular that hosts a TON of literature that is in the public domain...so I could read it offline rather than pay the $18.95 for the DVD.
But it didn't work. Not completely. It took 4 hours to download all of it and it did as it was supposed to but there were gaps. None of Aldous Huxley's writings were downloaded and heaven knows how much else didn't get downloaded.
I did check and the website admins have tools in place to combat this kind of thing since it places a heavy load on their servers.

Oh well.

Sorry you had this experience on your first try. Uh, gosh, going only from memory, I think there is a setting that allows you to either stop or slow the connection so that it doesn’t trigger the blocking mechanism on the website you’re trying to download.

I use it to backup my websites, and I get an email if my bandwidth is exceeded for the time period I specify. I have the option to disconnect the user automatically or use preset limits.

All that said, I set it about a year ago, and haven’t had to look at any settings since, so my memory isn’t clear on that.

If you can’t find those settings, try only downloading one or two levels at a time, then repeating it for the ones you left out. I’m pretty sure the links will be intact when you finish.

Do you only use windows? There exists free open sourced software for the Linux community that does the same thing. Some, like wget (google wget for windows), have been ported to windows and have a myriad of switches that will accommodate websites that limit your downloads, like FReerepublic, for instance. :)

Best of luck, FRiend!

EXCELLENT FREE SOFTWARE.... Excellent FREE software for about everything you need on your computer. I was impressed with the quality of the software and how well it runs on my new computer. The WRITER software can even read and write .doc files so you can use your old documents made with Word. The download is a .iso file which is a CD disk image file. You can't view the file until you burn it onto a CD using the "Burn Image to Disk" option in Nero or similar options on other CD burning software. There are a number of great programs on the CD once you make it. Currently the file you download is: OpenDisc 07.10 Released! ~545 Mb. It will take a while to download. It took me about 47 minutes with my DSL connection. It is well worth getting.

I have been using the software for a couple of years. It was called Open CD when I first started using it.

the ISO burns cleanly and gives you a raft of great programs in winduhs that I have been using for a while in Linux.
