One Perfect Season FOILED! (Miami Dolphins win first game of season)

Going into Sunday December 16, two perfect streaks were intact. The New England Patriots were undefeated; the Miami Dolphins were winless. Both teams hosted their respective games, a week ahead of what was to be a head-to-head matchup.

While the Patriots held up their part of the bargain, beating the Jets 20-10, the Dolphins and the Baltimore Ravens were in a struggle, and in fact, Miami had a great chance to win the game in regulation, taking a late 16-13 lead.

However, on the ensuing kickoff, the Miami kicker committed the cardinal sin of kicking the ball out of bounds, resulting in a 1st and 10 at the the Baltimore 40 yard line.

Unable to gain the endzone after a 1st and goal, the Ravens kicked a field goal on 4th and goal from the Dolphins' ONE YARD LINE, opting for the safe tie rather than going for the win on 4th down.

Miami failed to score with the eight seconds they had, and so the game went into overtime.

Baltimore won the toss and drove down to the Miami 34 yard line. In came Matt Stover, and a statistic that should have held certain doom for the winless Dolphins: in his career, Matt Stover had attempted 5 overtime kicks - and had made them all.

Make that 5 for 6 - his 44 yard attempt from the left hash wasn't even close. Miami took over at the spot of the hold, their own 34 yard line.

After a 1st down loss of 3 yards, and a 2nd down gain of 5, the Dolphins had 3rd and 8 on their own 36 yard line. A perfect slant later, Miami's player was gone - and so was the Dolphins' winless season.

Normally, the Dolphins break open champagne when an unbeaten team loses. Based on today's result, I imagine they had some champagne flowing today, along with the tears we saw.

Congratulations, Miami. You're the best 1 and 13 team I've seen since the 1989 Dallas Cowboys.

Well, one perfect season ruined...one to go. I can only imagine what Rome and Dan Patrick will have to say in the morning.

I was at the Super Bowl in Los Angeles the year they had the real “perfect season” and whipped the Redskins! What a game!

Poor Ravens, they must feel like real losers.

I was impressed with Troy Smith, looks like he’s going to have a great career.

Congrats on beating the evil Ravens. Although it would have been nice to see 0-14 play 14-0.

The NFL Network has an hour sportsumentory (if thats the right word) on each of the Super Bowl champions and yesterday they ran the two shows on the '72 and '73 Dolphins.

This is the criminally insane gangsta who has led the Ravens into being nothing more than an embarrassing bunch of urban thugs. When he is gone — along with Billick, Suggs, McAlister, and a bunch more of the Ravens miscreants — maybe my town can return to having a reputation for producing gentlemen winners like Unitas, Mackey, Brooks, and Frank.

They played for the team that was stolen from Baltimore, not the team that Baltimore stole from Cleveland. The Ravens ownership are a bunch of stealing thugs, so the players might as well be too.

As minor as it may seem to most, yesterday was a great day for me! Now if we just don’t screw it up and lose that first round pick, I would like to see just ONE more win next week.

Agreed. 2-14, with one victory over the Pats, is fine with me. San Francisco won, so we aren’t in danger of losing the #1 pick with another win.

Let’s take Glenn Dorsey, Chris Long, or Vernon Gholston.

Who cares? Both are windbags.
