I imagine it was exciting..
I was especially lucky because James McDivitt settled in Jackson Mi. after leaving NASA and my grandfather had business dealings with him. Granddad used to take me to the occasional business lunch and McDivitt had no problem taking a few minutes to tell stories about going into space.
