Anti-Mormons Attacks Must Stop, FR is Better Than That (Vanity)
December 12 2007 | jveritas

Posted on 12/12/2007 6:27:59 PM PST by jveritas

Dear FRiends

It really pains me to see some of those vicious anti-Mormons attacks we see on Free Republic disguised under the “freedom of speech. Attacking people based on their Mormon faith is really disgusting and it is an insult to this great forum. People who do not like Governor Mitt Romney based on his positions are free to express their opinion as such, but people who attack him because he is a Mormom should be ashamed of themselves and must not be allowed to do so.

I greatly hope that Free Republic members and moderators will get together and help in stopping this anti-Mormon vitriol, this great Free Republic must not be tainted by these shameless acts.

This is what the religion moderator has on her/his homepage.

As much as is possible I try to use a progressive method with uncooperative Religion Forum posters – a warning, and if that warning is ignored, a cookie (making him log in again), and if that is ignored, an hour suspension … and so on up to a banishment. I do this because an occasional misstep on such sensitive matters as one’s confession should be tolerable. But I will not be ignored.

Posters who have been previously banned and try to come back with a different handle will be banished as soon as they are “found out.” Some retreads stay off the “radar” by behaving themselves, but once they start picking fights – they cause the moderators – any of us – to investigate. If you have been previously banned and want to come back on the forum, make a request, promise not to do whatever caused the first banning.

A poster may also be banned in an instant if he is discovered to be a racist, a hate monger including an anti-Semitist, troll, anti-Freeper, etc.

There will be people on the forum who are anti- your confession whether anti-Christian, anti-Calvinist, anti-Catholic, anti-Protestant, anti-Mormon, anti-Atheist, anti-Scientologist and so on. As long as they are arguing for their position on an “Open” thread – and are not using hate mongering material such as the false “oath for Knights of Columbus” or Jack Chick cartoons – and are otherwise abiding by the guidelines, their challenges will be tolerated.

Threads that become “toxic” – which is to say have devolved into an unredeemable mess of hurt feelings will be locked or pulled. I prefer to lock the threads because many posters put a great deal of effort in their replies and would like to keep them bookmarked.

It is okay to vote against a cult member for that reason too.

No argument there, you are free to support or oppose whoever you wish, for whatever reasons. But there are consequences of calling other FReepers (who have not supported the liberal causes Romney espoused when running for the governorship of Massachusetts) "cultists".

Attack Mitt Romney any way you choose, but remember most people who share his religion are usually always on our side. They don't need to be attacked in the process of saying why Mitt Romney would not be the best choice as President.

As someone who was once an Acolyte in the Episcopal church, I resemble that remark.

On Oct. 27, 1838, Missouri Gov. Lilburn Boggs issued an extermination order, directing that Mormons be driven from the state or exterminated. By 1839, virtually all Mormons had been driven from the state.

So far there have been no anti-Mormon posts ~ at least as I understand such things. Time for you to visit some of the boards out there that really do take an anti-Mormon position ~ some wild stuff there.

I think it was Sam Johnson who criticized the early Methodists as people who slaughtered young children and drank their blood. He was in error ~ but he didn't know it at the time.

None of the anti-Mormon sites accuse Mormons of what Johnson accused the Methodists of doing.

After Romney’s speech I was convinced that the one thing he really does believe is his religion.

His conversions to all things conservative are not believable.

You can’t police the marketplace of ideas, FRiend.

And you really need to stop worrying about what “they” will think of us Freepers. The more you seek to appease “them”, the more you will become like “them”.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but, I'm not particularly interested in what you deem to be a vicious anti-Mormon attack at the moment.

My interest is in what jveritas believes is a vicious anti-Mormon attack.

Everyone here except Mormons, Orthodox Christians, Jews (of all types), Moslems, Hindus and Buddhists (to name the big ones) belongs to a church that directly, or indirectly, signed on to the Treaty of Westphalia.

Time for the others to get with the picture and sign on. It would change the nature of the criticisms directed at them.

I'll say this, if our Mormon FReeper friends will still speak to the rest of us after this election is over, its either because the attacks on their religion stopped, or they're very, very patient and tolerant people.

Only Islam has been attacked more stringently here on FR, and it wasn't Mormon bishops steering those planes into the WTC and the Pentagon on 9/11. As an atheist, I don't have a dog in this fight, but I do know that most LDS people vote for the kinds of people FReepers vote for, and they are allies in the cause of keeping this country out of the hands of the socialist, race-baiting, greedy liberal Clymers in our midst.

That strikes me as an honest, sincere post.

On another note, I pray and hope that Christ reveals Himself to you. God Bless.

Agree on the not conservative, but his parents are Episcopalians and he was raised one.

Until the recent one, San Diego has had Conservative Episcopal Bishops. One was also a ret. Capt. with two purple hearts.

A priest here who is rector of a parish served in Iraq a year ago.

Ret. Marine General Victor Krulak, Commandant of the Marines as was his son is an Episcopalian here and another son an Episcopal Priest.

Not correct.

You are incorrect. In fact, Baptists, who are one of the largest Protestant bodies, specifically reject any and all creeds.

Are you suggesting those contributors should not discuss the matters of their deepest convictions here??

I do believe there is a Religion Forum on this site. Perhaps you should discuss such issues *there* and leave political candidates out of it since they typically do not serve in the upper echelons of their churches.

If the goal is to make serious discussions about religious doctrine, not taking swipes at political candidates, the Religion Forum would seem like the perfect venue for that. But, my guess is that most of the Mormon-bashing is essentially Romney-bashing and they have no interest at all in making religious points, only political points.

I do not condone bigotry of ones belief in any shape or form. With that said if Mitt Romney gets the nomination the flood gates will be open to debate on every doctrine of the LDS church...It will bring out the ex-mormons in droves. MR better be able to handle the questions he will be asked on many, many areas of the LDS church.

Some sites on the web go beyond vile in that regard.

At FR we have to be on our guard to not engage in uncivil remarks about religion as the 6’ Leprechaun on FOXNews would love to tear us apart for such a thing.

Hence,.. my original reply.

Debating doctrinal issues belongs in another venue, not here.

If by 'here' you mean on the News/Activism Forum, you are correct, it belongs in the Religion Forum, or possibly The Smokey Backroom.
