The function that "automatically" acquires an IP address is DHCP (Dynamic Host Control Protocol). If your 'puter isn't set to use it, it will choose an IP address from a range your router doesn't recognize. That may be your problem.

Indeed. Sounds like a network issue as opposed to a computer issue.
