Windows XP trounced Windows Vista in all tests, regardless of the versions used or the amount of memory running on the computer, says Devil Mountain Software.
In the latest Mac versus PC ad, that put-upon Windows guy quietly concedes he's "downgrading" from Vista to XP. He may have good reason: new tests show that the older XP runs common productivity tasks significantly faster than Microsoft's newest operating system.
Researchers at Devil Mountain Software, a Florida-based developer of performance management tools, have posted data from their most recent Windows performance tests -- and Vista, even after it's been upgraded to the new Service Pack 1 beta package, is shown to be a laggard.
"The hoped for performance fixes [from Vista SP1] that Microsoft has been hinting at never materialized," said Devil Mountain researchers, in a blog post summarizing their results.
The researchers compared patched and unpatched versions of Vista and XP running Microsoft Office on a dual-core Dell notebook. The results revealed the time taken to complete Office productivity tasks such as the creation of a compound document and presentation materials.
Devil Mountain researchers ran a mix of tests comparing existing versions of the operating systems -- the original Vista and XP SP2 -- and versions that had been patched with the latest updates -- Vista SP1 beta and XP SP3 beta. Tests were also run on machines with 1 Gbyte and 2 Gbytes of memory.
Windows XP trounced Windows Vista in all tests -- regardless of the versions used or the amount of memory running on the computer. In fact, XP proved to be roughly twice as fast as Vista in most of the tests.

I know the website. But I can speak of only my experience. I like Leopard and think OS X is the bomb.
If you need XP, you can run it on your mac too.
I believe you are right. DRM will be MS's strategy to hold its own against Linux. A DRM-enabled device will necessarily be rigged so that no open-source OS can use it. Hardware vendors will be forced to choose between producing hardware that works exclusively with Windows, or not run on Windows at all
I recently bought a new desktop computer with Vista Home Edition. It sucks. Anyone know how to downgrade to XP?
30% of businesses and 98% of home computer users.
I got a new computer 6 months ago and I told them they can keep their free Vista “upgrade”, just give me XP. They told me, “Good choice.”
My latest install was Linux. I love it and works great with teenage girls that like to download everything they see. Now they can’t.
And for a long time, computer buyers had a choice between DOS 3.31 and DOS 4.01, because no one wanted the newer version.
Sorry, I’ll never drive a hybrid, I’ll never buy coffee from starbucks, and I’ll never own a computer in which Al Gore sits on the board.
I’ll stick with my PC, my SUV, and I’ll continue to enjoy Dunkin’ Donuts.
meh, but thats just me :)
Oh, absolutely. I did the same for the new computer I got 6 months ago. They offered a free “upgrade” to Vista and I said no, I’ll just take the XP. I’ve been running it for a few years with no problems. Funny, they can’t give it away. New computer buyers are doing their homework and passing on Vista in favor of XP.
THe only thing I know about laptop graphics cards is that if you want a laptop with a good one you have to buy a dell. And it is very expensive.
THat’s a dumb move. The more they pull crap like that the more people will be switching to macs and to linux(or variations of).
Maybe the problem with vista is that the hardware tech is lagging behind. I won’t be getting it anyway. I’ve got a full install version of 98SE and also XP. When these no longer meet my needs, I’m saying goodbye to microsoft forever. If not sooner.
It will be even more interesting when Windows XP Service Pack 3—now in advanced beta testing—comes out spring 2008. Testers who’ve tried SP3 said it is quite a bit faster than Windows XP SP2, probably due to new hardware driver support for newer CPU’s and motherboard chipsets.
I doubt they’ll stop supporting XP. They tried that once and the marketplace had a cow.
I bought one Dell Machine that was offered with Windows ME, but opted to get it with Windows 2000 instead for an extra $99. As far as I'm concerned most of the computers built after mid 2000 that were bundled with Win98 or WinME should have been bundled with Win2K.
So my 4 year old dual 3.06 Ghz P4 Zeon Dell Precision 650 probably won't see a performance improvement.
Bought a new laptop in June with Vista and I like it. What problems are you having with Vista?
Bump to that.
Do you still have dial-up too. Just teasing ;)
Remember Classic Coke?
Same thing. Changing back while pretending to save face.
