I had no skin in the game...once lived in Kansas City but went to what is now a big 12 school...Colorado.

Was rooting for Kansas....but Kansas came (expecting) to win and Missouri came to play. Happens every time....

So I lost on Kansas, and Kentucky but won on Texas A&M and Arkansas....

Great weekend of football! The level of play is incredible. It's an order of magnitude better than the late 50's, early 60's when I was in school.

It has been a great weekend for college football, though my UConn Huskies lost, AR won, and USC won.

Your experience and analysis is very similar to mine. One reason for that your quoted statement is true, I suspect, is that during that time period, athletes were all expected to read and be "college material." Now college football is simply a farm system for the NFL, and we have many semi-sentient people playing.
