Many IT professionals are turning to Mac and Linux systems to avoid installing Microsoft's Windows Vista operating system as an upgrade, according to a survey conducted by King Research. Of 961 IT professionals polled, a whopping 90 percent expressed concerns about migrating to Vista. What's more, over half of those surveyed said they had no plans to use Microsoft's latest operating system at this time. Macs are currently the most favored alternative to Windows with 28 percent of respondents saying they would most likely to turn to Macs, rather than upgrade to Vista.

The number one platform that runs these is Win2k3. Except for Oracle where HP-UX is the clear leader.
I will say that Vista is a non-starter in this arena...nobody wants it. Heck, not much XP usage either. But there isn't any appreciable Mac presence.

Hey...I'm all for it if Mac can do all the replicating that needs to be done without using all of the hoops Microsoft requires....VDS, VSS and the rest of it.
MS has a hard limit on the length of time a SQL or Exchange database can be frozen by any replication application using VSS....10 seconds. that's it. 10 seconds to freeze the DB and use the Volume Shadowcopy Service to take a snap shot of the database. If it doesn't get done in 10 seconds, VSS takes over and fails the replication. Period.

You are right on, of course, but I think they are pretty much talking desktops here.
It should be noted that what IT professionals say on a questionnaire and what the company will actually approve are often two very different things. I can attest to that first hand.
My company is still using Windows 2000.
We wouldn’t want to jump in to anything hastily.
I can’t see them moving to OS 10 though they are too heavily invested in Window’s other products.

I happen to have a recurring blue screen of death phenomena recent weeks . . . when I get to the bottom of the MS support screen where it asks if the page has been helpful
I always say no.
Because the cause is always: “unknown.”
I talk about how they have abused their customers for over 10 years now . . . and 98% of the time or thereabouts, in my experience, the support is NOT AT ALL HELPFUL and usually infuriating.
I also talk about them doing an increasingly good job of convincing me I should switch to a Mac or Linux.
I sometimes mention how with all their megabucks and megabrains that they should have set up automated software modules to check problems out and fix them quickly, easily and automatically long before this.
I haven’t received any great thanks for such feedback, yet.
True enough. I generally only get a window into the server end of things. I'd like to get real glimpse of how many Mac clients are on the other side of the data center. Maybe I'll have to start asking.

I have my first Vista system at the compound. Have already set it to dual boot Fedora.
Now if I can learn enough Linux to make a difference.
I have worked corporate IT in two large organizations doing server administration. I can say with confidence that they will never go with Macs for general desktop use. They would go strictly Terminal Services first, for end users. FAR more cost effective and easier to manage.
Then there is the “change” factor. End users freak if their desktop icons change. I can only imagine informing 10,000 computer illiterate users that they will be required to learn a completely new OS.

But what they are mainly doing is not upgrading -either staying with XP or buying new machines.
And don’t forget that pile of sludge that they call Office 2007. To begin with, it’s default settings make its files impossible to read by earlier versions and I still haven’t been able to make Open Office work with them.
And how about a user interface for Word that defaults to double spacing of lines and even the changes to fix it do not persist? An interface so confusing that it doesn’t even have a default place for quick print, and I couldn’t find the normal print button where you can adjust page layout, target printer and the like?
I happily downgraded to Office 2003, even though, for now, it has blown apart Outlook?

You will. Armed with persistence and Google, anyone can “learn Linux”.
I did. I still use Windows (XP) for my day-to-day. Some of my software (EDA and data acquisition programming tools) runs only on Windows.
But I have been poking at Linux for about 3 years now — at first out of intrigue, and lately because it’s simply the best (or only) tool for the job. For example, our virtual private server is Linux because that was the best choice; and I’m running a Ubuntu workstation (via VMWare hosted on my XP machine) to build Linux software for our microcontroller product firmware, ‘cause that’s the *only* reasonable way to get ‘er done.
I’m not intending to start a “distro flame war”, but I really like Ubuntu. I tried Fedora but it just never gained any traction in my circumstances.

Bought a MacBook Pro about 3 wks. ago. Haven’t been doing much but surfing so far.
I now have 1 Mac and 2 Dell Desktops.
The Mac is superior but I haven’t learned where everything is yet.
Going tomorrow for my first one on one lesson.
I plan to replace the Dell’s w/ Macs next year. Tired of MS and all the PC problems.
