A crime as minor as stealing candy from a business can draw the attention of Millington's police brass if the timing's right.
That would be lunchtime.
A suspect was captured moments after the merchandise was taken from the Family Dollar Store around noon Thursday -- chased down by Insp. Charlie Coleman, as Police Chief Rick Jewell handled radio traffic from an unmarked car and Insp. Reggie Fields scoured the area for the fleeing suspect.
A 25-year-old man named Bond -- James E. Bond -- was captured by the trio of middle-aged police commanders.
Not only that, Coleman, 45, ran the suspect down wearing a blue blazer, dress shirt, red tie and khaki pants. His tracking shoes? A pair of black loafers with tassels.
"A 45-year-old man ran him down," Coleman said after the arrest, adding that he had just finished the Spicy McChicken Meal. "And right now, it doesn't feel too good on my stomach."
The episode began when the man took bags of candy from the business, Coleman said. As the call went out, the three commanders were leaving McDonald's further west on Navy Road. Coleman was driving one car, with Jewell riding shotgun. Fields was in another car.
A man matching the description was walking along Navy Road. When Coleman approached him, the suspect fled into the Millington Oaks apartments at Navy and Church.
"When he started to run, I grabbed on to his shirt," Coleman said. "I didn't have a good grip on it, and he took off."
Coleman, without a radio, chased the suspect, the inspector's blazer whipping in the breeze and the black tassels slapping against the top of the intertwined leather on his makeshift running shoes.
Jewell started to follow, but Coleman hollered back for him to stay with the radio.
"That's my job," Jewell said laughing. "(Coleman) came out of the blocks quicker than me, so I stayed with the car."
Fields saw the suspect flee from Coleman, who later found the man hiding at the top of a stairwell in the apartment complex. Uniformed officers arrived and took Bond into custody.
Fields, 44, said he and Coleman "have gotten too old to be chasing these guys."
Bond, who has been arrested 15 times by Millington officers since 2001, will face charges of evading arrest and theft of property under $500.
Missing from the chase was Mayor Terry Jones, who caught some grief recently for pulling over a man later charged with driving under the influence.
The mayor was in his office unaware of Thursday's chase.
"I've learned my lesson," Jones said.
Here’s one for the not-a-ping list
