OK, it's definitive -- the universe is NOT a doughnut, it is a pizza...

interesting link:

http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap071107.html

“These include the Shapley Supercluster of galaxies, part of the Pisces-Cetus Supercluster, and part of the Horologium-Reticulum Supercluster.”

Naming a supercluster of galaxies after Shapley makes no sense:

http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/htmltest/gifcity/cs_why.html

“Curtis argued that the Universe is composed of many galaxies like our own, which had been identified by astronomers of his time as ‘spiral nebulae’. Shapley argued that these ‘spiral nebulae’ were just nearby gas clouds, and that the Universe was composed of only one big Galaxy.”

Some claim that the egregiously left wing Shapley was equally right because of some tiny little thing he was right about (his greatly exaggerated size of our galaxy is said at the page to have been “more correct” — but he was so awfully wrong about the size and organization of the universe that Curtis’ idea and his name should be the one celebrated.
