The Yankees have settled on a choice for Joe Torre’s successor as the manager, and it is Joe Girardi, the former manager of the Florida Marlins who won three titles as a catcher for the Yankees in the 1990s. Girardi was selected over Don Mattingly and Tony Peña, who were members of Torre’s last coaching staff with the Yankees.

“The Yankees have expressed interest in Joe becoming manager,” Girardi’s agent, Steve Mandel, said in a telephone interview Monday. “We’ve decided to have discussions with them and we’re moving forward. No timetable has been set, but it’s a process we’re letting take place.”

Like cheering for the dealer at blackjack.

On the contrary. Like cheering for the Marines in Fallujah.

The quality of mercy is not strained. It droppeth from Heaven...You get the picture.

The Yankees are falling back into the 1980-1995 period where they are going to hire and fire managers left and right and dwell in mediocrity. I was just trying to be nice.

Hows that? Better?

No, not better but truthful. Congratulations on the World Series. The Bosox were a pleasure to watch in postseason.

Girardi got canned from the Marlins because he told the owner whree to stick it after the owner started yelling at some umpires.

He will probably not last too long working for the Steinbrenners.

It’s time to re-build. Girardi is the Manager to do it. If the high-priced older talent is a problem, it’s not a problem the Yankees have to live with.

He’s part of the reason I wasn’t particularly worried about Bonds taking the HR Record ... A-Rod should blow that record away (Not to mention the doubles record, the hits record, the RBI Record, etc.). He’s around 30, and he’s already surpassed Jeff Bagwell’s HR total for his entire career (449 - though, to be fair, much of that was in the ridiculously HUGE Astrodome).

A-Rod has passed the total of home runs hit by the Pride of the Yankees, Lou Gehrig, 493, although Gehrig would surely have hit far more than 500 if his career hadn’t been cut short by his fatal illness.
