PC tech question

I run Microsoft Money on my PC. A week ago when I tried to log in I got an error message saying that Money could not validate my password and that I should go online, log into MSN Money, and update my settings. But I can no longer log into MSN.com, either. I just get a long string of possible problems but no solution.

This problem follows a notice one morning last week that in the night my Windows XP was updated automatically and that "this may cause some programs to run more slowly or not at all."

Does anyone know how to overcome this so I may agaiin access MSMoney? Thanks.

I can't help you with MS Money, other than to suggest that you buy a copy of Quicken. It's not very expensive, and it will import your MS Money information.

I'm a longtime Microsoft customer, and even have a number of MS administration and engineering certifications. The fact is, Microsoft is interested in only one company: Microsoft.

Hope you can get to your data, one way or another.

Jay Lee the tech writer for the Houston Chronicle had an article on a similar problem. info on many problems and solutions can be found at his web site.

if you go into Add/Remove programs in Control Panel you’ll see all the installed updates and you can remove the most recent one, it should resolve the problem if the update caused the issue. Also, each Microsoft product usually has it’s own page on their website, they may have an update for MS-Money that will fix the problem, chances are you aren’t the only person who’s had this problem.

Try deleting your Cookies, offline content, and clearing your browser history. This is assuming you are using IE to access it.

After re-reading your post, it sounds to me like your MS passport somehow got changed. See if you have any options to reset your password.

I understand that doesn’t work. You have to go to services and disable it also. There is a long link about this on ZDNet. IT folks are really screaming about what they call stealth updates. Other programs also use MS installer for updates and from what I could make of it this could also be part of the problem. Go here: http://blogs.zdnet.com/microsoft/?p=832&tag=nl.e539

“...turn the automatic updates off”

YES! Then you can manually do the updates after doing any necessary backups. Then subscribe to CERT.

11 posts and no one telling him to switch to Linux, or a Mac? I’m disappointed.

There are RULES for these threads, people!

We had a problem with MS porfolio for a while this past week and it was a pain because I use it all the time —my guess is that they were fiddling with some “improvement” that wasn’t working out. I had a real battle getting logged on but it’s been fine for me today...

Okay - just to make you feel better...

Go to the Start-Run - type in cmd then hit okay

At c:> format c:

Now go get a kubunto live CD and install. It’ll solve all your problems.

To me, the fact that you cannot access either the program or the website is instructive.

I will presume that your account, managed on line and also in your PC are both protected by a common password.

In your case, when you cannot access either, the possibility that your password has been intercepted/changed/FUBARed/mess up by MS or whatever is the real issue.

Personally, due to the VERY personal and important data in this account, I would instantly get in touch with the website ASAP.

Do not delay.

I was the victim of a crime due to account hijacking and it cost me thousands to clear it up.

I say again, do not delay.

Get access to the website and your accounts IMMEDIATELY.

Cheers,

If you had a system restore point set not too long before the “upgrade”, restore it, then make sure you disable automatic updates. Also make sure you back up any critical data files to make sure you aren’t doing more harm than good.

Vista is starting to sound like one of the best sales tools for Apple in years.
