What language did they base Klaatus speech on in The Day the Earth Stood Still?
Posted on 10/16/2007 5:18:40 PM PDT by Oakleaf
Can anyone tell me the source of the language that Michael Rennie used as Klaatu in The Day the Earth Stood Still? I have done extensive searches and have found out only a theory for Klaatu Barada Nikto.
I am trying to find who came up with the brief sequence of language when Klaatu has snuck back in the saucer and is contacting his HQ to arrange for the electricity to be shut off the next day. It sounds vaguely like Esperanto but I am sure it was totally made up. Did some screenwriter just dash this off? Did they get a consultant who wrote it? I have acutally found the original script online but it doesn't have the actual dialog, only a note that a 'fantastic alien language' IIRC will be spoken.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I have no idea, but they’re going to do yet another remake of it:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0970416/
It’s an anti-military movie. Figures that they’d remake it for release during an election year.

Nikto is Russian for “nobody.” As for barada, I have no idea.

For some reason, I thought the phrase originated in the 1921 play “R.U.R.”
But Googling doesn’t support my theory, so I must suppose I imagined it.

Why do you desire to learn this, Earthling ? Do you plan to thwart our nefarious schemes ?
( Side conversation: "But supposing someone learns Al Gore is one of us ???" "Shhh ! They'll hear you !" )
For those dedicated to sci-fi trivia, by the way, the movie was based on a short story called "The Master".
In the story, the Robot was actually the master.
