Except in the last paragraph he says:
He is convinced that a missile blew the engine off three miles from where the bulk of the plane descended into the ocean. All evidence supports him, including now, a literal smoking gun, an object with sufficient fuel of its own to still have been burning at least a half hour after the crash. And that object is not likely the engine.
So, what was it? Someone burning a pile of leaves in the back yard? A house fire? some bums at a rail yard gathered around a 55-gallen drum with oily rags? He doesn't say.
Leaves burning out on the water?
I wondered about that sentence as well. Could it be a typo in a really “critical” sentence? It just doesn’t fit in with the rest of the paragraph at all.
