Supposedly, all the components that would have been downloaded on the last day of WU’98 are still out there, but you have to get them file by file.

That's what I was afraid of. Fortunately Extremely Extreme Extremist's solution is much better. I was able to find a cheap CD on EBay with all the updates and a program to install them.

Windows 98 Update package

This CD includes everything you need to turn Microsoft Windows 98 into a Modern Operating System. Includes Updates for Windows 98 and Windows 98 Second Edition

Just pop in the CD and begin installing. No more update headaches, we have created auto installers for all the included software!

System Requirements: Microsoft Windows 98 or 98 Second Edition - If you are not sure which version of Windows 98 you have, you can find out simply by checking your System Properties. To do this, right mouse click on "My Computer" and select "Properties".

Included Software:

Windows system updates:
Unofficial Service pack 2 for Windows 98 Second Edition. Released May 5, 2005. - Microsoft has never released a service pack for Windows98 SE, but Alper Coskun has made one. It contains all Windows98 SE updates from Windows Update site and more. Uninstallation is possible from Add-Remove Programs. It does NOT contain Internet Explorer 6, DirectX 9, Media Player 9 and their updates. For complete details, to donate to the developer, or for support for this service pack please see the developer site.

Updated Service Pack 1 for Windows 98. - The original Windows 98 Service Pack 1 consisted of five components. Two of the components, Internet Explorer 4 and the Outlook Express 4, are no longer available. Instead, Windows 98 users should get IE6sp1, the system update and the two Y2K patches which we have included. In addition, we have included The dialup Networking 1.4 upgrade and the second version of the Windows installer required by some programs to install, modify, repair, or remove an existing application.

There used to be an Unofficial Windows 98 SE service pack on Majorgeeks.com.

Can’t find it now, go with the eBay suggestion.

Just check the CD for viruses and spyware before you load it. I don’t trust eBay much anymore.
