As Michael Crabtree inbounded the ball during an A.A.U. basketball game in north Texas three summers ago, Texas Tech Coach Bob Knight whispered to him the question that every coach wanted answered: Football or basketball? Back then, the question was not as easy to answer as it is today. Crabtree starred in both sports at David W. Carter High School in Dallas. He was a two-year starter at quarterback and the most valuable player of a state all-star basketball game in 2006. Colleges did not care which sport he played as long as he was on their campus. But as a freshman at Texas Tech, Crabtree has answered Knights question with an exclamation point. He is having the best freshman season of any receiver in college football history, and he leads the nation in four major offensive categories. He has become such a phenomenon that Texas Tech fans make crab-claw hand gestures during games and the Tech cheerleaders are doing crab walks through the end zone to celebrate his touchdowns. This whole crab scene has taken on a life of its own, Texas Tech Coach Mike Leach said. I just go with it.

I went back for a game a couple years ago for the first time since I graduated in ‘90. My boys and I sat on the non-student side. Weird. When I was in ROTC, we used to clean Jones Stadium on Sunday’s for $500.00 a game. But afterward we got to play on the field. Great hangover cure.
