That's not a Flash (swf or flv) file, it is a simple animated gif. Doesn't change direction, its an old optical illusion.

Unless the program can read minds, that isn’t true. I can make it appear to change direction pretty reliably, after a little playing.

Optical illusion is right, and a pretty cool one! I’m not as convinced of the whole right brain / left brain analysis part of the story, though.
