All right, I exaggerated. "They" means Captain Hyperbole.

The company I work for has "Rogue's Gallery" of sorts where they have a display of storage technology from years past.
Arranged in a timeline fashion...there's a beastie in the display just like the one pictured above. Sure is an amazing sight.

My first computer was an Altos 586 (10MHz 8086 processor, 1MB RAM, 5 serial ports, no video adapter). I replaced the 10MB hard drive with a 40MB full height Microscience hard drive. I bought it used for $1000.00! But it was more than enough for Altos XENIX and the Xenix Development System.
Last week I bought a Seagate "FreeAgent" 750GB USB/eSATA drive for $200. Just in portable USB drives I have around here, I've got nearly 2.5 terabytes of storage.

Do you remember the first 1GB IDE drives? they were designed to get around the 504MB barrier with a jumper which would logically create 2 500MB drives on the same physical drive? I've still got one of those around here... Along with LOTS of other ancient HW... For instance, right now I'm looking at a Hayes 1200bps external modem, and 2 USR Dual Standards! How about an ancient Compaq Presario 386 slimline, which had the processor upgraded with one of those 486SX processor upgrades... I've got an HP Deskpro with a Pentium Pro 200! And 4 boxes with AMD K6/2 500MHz processors...

Note also that the interface is ATA-100, not ATA-133...

Well, you know how it goes. Just as soon as somebody develops a storage medium worthy of the name somebody else offers porn in higher resolution. You just can’t keep up.

It’s dramatic and it’s not even an accurate picture. I have a 1g Micro SD card that’s a fraction of the size of the card pictured. 1g now is more limited by the size of the protective case and the neccessary interface than the memory. You could literally fit a gig on a the head of pin with modern technology.

Excellent. I just mentioned the micro SD card in my phone. This picture doesn’t do it justice. If you account for width you could put a dozen micros in the same space as an SD card.

1 GB?
Bah! Here's the latest size:

And more interestingly:

Both roughly 0.5" by 0.5".

Most expensive hard drive I ever bought was a 20mb Sun20 hard drive for a little under five grand. Used it for five years.
I’ve 2 4gb cards (one compact flash 4gb, one sd 4gb card) on my PDA now, both cards running a total of $40.
It is amazing how much has changed in 25 years. I used a radio phone 25 years ago to place a wireless call - basically a radio to a basestation where they manually connected me to the telephone network. Now I’ve got wireless internet through my phone.

And 1GB MicroSD card is about one eighth the size of that SD card in the photo.
