BS used to be really good at writing and performing teen anthems, Backstreets and Thunder Road to name a couple. Great songs.

But he about wrung all he could out of that genre. Unfortunately he's had nothing unique to offer for the past thirty years.

The Ramones weren’t even the first. The Dictators were on Epic in 1974 (and much more rock than their “political” sounding name might suggest).

But the Ramones were a cornerstone of the CBGB scene and a counterculter playing 15 minute sets as compared to Brooce’s 3 hour shows even then.

The 70s wasn’t all disco. It was also singer-songwriter James Taylor/Billy Joel/Joni Mitchell/Helen Reddy material, country-fied rock (not necessary of the southern rock variety), bloated prog jams, etc.

In that climate, the Ramones stripped it down even more than the Velvet Underground did before them, played 1-2-3-4, repeated the chorus, played a few more songs, and got off the stage.

The music corporations and producers didn’t get it.

Umm, isn’t he shutting up and singing here. This is after all a song.

In any case if a band or artist is good enough to listen to, their views really aren’t enough to get me to stop listening.

Arcade Fire remain one of the best bands on CD and probably the best band I have seen live despite the singer dedicating a song to “Governor Bush”.

I am not anymore entitled to my opinions than they are to theirs. And I’m not going to begrudge them for having a larger platform to spout those opinions.

>> Sadly, I use to like the Boss. I’ve seen hime three times in concert and he always puts on a great show.

I, too, liked Springsteen ... though my musical tastes tend to run more to heavy metal/ hard rock than classic rock. The music industry is populated by mostly liberal wackos ... though, this is amazingly less true in heavy metal/ hard rock than in the classic rock genres. Most of the metal guys are politically ambivalent.

I don’t have a political litmus-test before listening to a group ... so long as they’re not so over-the-top liberal that its distracting. Overall, I’d just prefer it if they’d shutup.

I’d credit Aerosmith and Black Sabbath more than Springsteen for pushing us out of the disco era. They inspired much of the 80’s and 90’s rock ... Metallica and Guns and Roses particularly.

Many of them are reliving the 50s. Mort Sahl criticized Artie Shaw for “skulking away from the red-baiters.” Two things he learned from Shaw, though: Don’t marry an actress and don’t start a big band.
