MAXEYS - People have come from as far away as Africa to see the cow carousel at Cabaniss Dairy, on the southern edge of Oglethorpe County.
Don't laugh. The machine that makes cows go round and round enabled the Cabaniss family to milk cows so much faster than with traditional machines, they more than doubled their herd of dairy cows, making it into one of the state's larger dairy operations.
"This is the most efficient way in the world to milk cows," said Jon Cabaniss, 33, who operates the family farm with his brother, Jim Cabaniss, 35.
The carousel is just what it sounds like: a great big wheel with stalls for 60 cows, which are milked by an octopus-like machine as they take a slow circuit on the carousel.
The moving circle is powered by just two half-horsepower motors, which is enough to keep the carousel moving in its circle on a track much like a railroad track.
Before Cabaniss Dairy installed the machine seven years ago on their farm near Maxeys, 10 workers took three shifts to milk 500 cows a day; now four workers milk 1,200 cows a day.

I was a little disappointed in the video....I was hoping to see the cows moving up and down, some flashing lights and carousel music. I didn’t see any saddles on the cows, either. Did I miss that? (grin) Definitely on its way to a milkshake. However, it is a slow turn. Did I say churn? We could be on the way to instant butter!?
I can see why some might say no whey.
But since this is a cattle call, no bull ... allowed.
