A Linux user who was jailed for uploading a film onto a peer-to-peer service has been told he will have to switch to Windows if he wants to use a computer again.

I'd have to run virtualization or something. That would be too much!
Come on judge, go easy on me. Can't I have the death penalty instead?
LOL! Amen!
I thought the Bill of Rights forbade cruel and unusual punishments.
Heh heh heh
You’d think!
So put the OS on a flash drive and boot to it. The windows install won’t show that he even used it.
Only if he wants to use a computer. If you do the crime, don’t complain about the consequences.
Straight to jail if he gets caught.
I absolutely agree.
I’d actually argue it is unconstitutional - he’s being forced to change everything because the gov’t can’t write Linux monitoring programs:
... Tuesday he reported on his blog that the terms of his sentence meant he would have to install Windows if he wanted to use a computer during his probation. “I had a meeting with my probation officer today, and he told me that he has to install monitoring software onto my PC,” wrote McCausland. “No big deal to me...that is part of my sentence.”
“It isn’t the fact that I have to be monitored that bothers me, it is the fact that I have (to) restructure my life (different OS, different software on that OS) and that they would require (force) me to purchase software while I am currently unemployed and relatively unemployable with the two felonies that they gave me,” McCausland said. “It is just a ridiculous situation.”
Now before all the “he’s a thief, do the crime do the time” folks go off, think for a minute
He uploaded a movie...
Didn’t rape anyone, didn’t diddle little boys, isn’t in the Klan, didn’t invade our borders, didn’t blow anything up and he isn’t a terrorist.
I hope he wins!
Incidentally, the NRA and a lot of FReepers here think he should never own guns again, he’s a convicted felon!
