MONTEBELLO, Quebec Leaders of the United States, Canada and Mexico have begun their discussions of the Security and Prosperity Partnership behind closed doors here at the five-star Fairmont Le Chateau resort in Montebello, Quebec.
President Bush arrived at mid-afternoon yesterday, with the presidential helicopter landing on the club's golf course, as Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper was waiting to greet him.
As the two met, Harper commented that Bush appeared to travel with his own security army of Secret Service.
Mexico's President Felipe Calderon arrived later, and could be the first to depart as forecasters estimated Hurricane Dean is pressing on a southern route headed toward the Yucatan peninsula.
Ottawa, Canada's nearby capital city, appeared militarized for the meetings, with police squad cars visible on virtually every downtown corner and cross-street.
All roads leading to Montebello were blocked off by military-like roadblocks, with the local police backed up by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Canada's national police force, in charge.

closed because immigration was the topic of discussion and they did not want the rabble to know?
I’m guessing that President Bush is groveling in apology to El Presidente for having been forced to actually enforce our laws and deport the illegal alien who thumbed her nose at our laws.
“Whenever two or more are gathered in my name.....LOOK OUT!
If you access the SPP site a “Myth vs. Fact” section indicates that this whole thing is above board and out in the open. Yet, 21 Congressmen came out publicly objecting and saying it is out of public view and outside of congressional oversight and approval....as described below:
Duncan Hunter, R-California....”successfully offered an amendment to H.R.3074, the Transportation Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2008, prohibiting the use of federal funds to participate in SPP-related working group meetings in the future.
The members noted in their letter that, “This vote is an indication of the serious concerns felt by those of us in Congress and by our constituents about this initiative concerns that will only be intensified if pursuit of the SPP continues out of public view and without congressional oversight or approval.”
The last paragraph of the letter called upon the president “not to pledge or agree to any further movement in connection with the SPP at the upcoming North American summit.”

This sellout of the citizens will make the carter Panama Canal giveaway look trivial.
I have always considered armed insurrection to be a lunatic fringe idea, but I’m beginning to wonder what other option will be available if our own leaders are determined to betray us.
Now you know the core reason why no fence is going up on the mexican border.
Who needs a steenkin fence when we are all unified in the North American Union?
Phone calls, faxes, letters, emails, prayers. Promises to vote against them. Threats of withholding campaign contributions.
Did I leave anything out?
People have already been doing all that-there is no way that the President or the Congress are unaware of the will of the people, much less of the law of the land and the concept of national sovereignty—but they still persist in selling us out-they don’t even care if we know, once they’ve shaken hands with the devil and done the dirty deal-what do we do when they just don’t care? President Bush KNOWS that Americans don’t want to be part of some North American super-state with a unified currency and economy-yet he’s up in Canada laying the groundwork for just that-the will of the majority, and I mean a majority, bi-partisan at that-bears no weight with him-for whom is he doing this?
Tax revolt!!
General strike!
I think you’ve hit on something there, Mrsmel. How often have I written a representative only to receive a reply basically saying to heck with your concerns, this is what I believe.
So many Americans are caught up in their own lives replete with sit-coms, buying at the mall, and similar idleness....that it’s likely some in our government have become downright cocky in believing so few citizens care....that they can do whatever they want. Not to mention low voter turnout in many primaries.
Canadian leader Harper’s sarcastic comment that only a couple of hundred protestors showed up shows pompous conceit and total disregard for the thousands who were there to protest. What I’d like to know is what Pres. Bush said in response: Did he say it’s part of America’s Constitution for people to peacefully protest and there’s nothing “sad” about it? Did he say, “Au contraire my comrad....there are thousands here. Perhaps we should listen!”
I have applauded Pres. Bush for supporting pro-life causes so well, but this kind of thing really undermines his credibility. I can’t decide if he’s just naive or simply conniving when it comes to this issue. And if he is on the up and up, then he’d best begin adhering to the constitutional principle that American leaders are servants of the American people....not servants of global elites.
I want badly to respect this president, but his actions are causing many former supporters to seriously wonder what the heck is going on. I applaud the 21 congressmen who have shown courage in protesting the secretiveness or this and also the omission of congress in the process. I think we ought to write them and thank them for their service to America!
You express my feelings exactly, except that I am tending to think more and more that there’s no way this President could be that naive. I have also vociferously supported President Bush, writing, calling, and emailing to express my support. That’s why I am so frustrated that he and his advisors are so hell-bent on this merger-that’s what it will all lead to-with Canada and especially Mexico. What I don’t understand, is why is he doing this, in whose interest is he acting? Not that of Americans, who are proud of being American, proud of our love of freedom, liberty, individuality, and sovereignty. For over 200 years, no matter what else we’ve disagreed on, we’ve held fast to that. What is motivating this total disregard for us? Who is this benefitting?
That about sums it up for me too. It’s written that a man can’t serve two masters. Hate to think about what the future holds for America unless things change rapidly for the better.
I think you are 100% correct. We have long since passed the tipping point where GWBush knows our anger over immigration.
Even the fence bill signing was done as a last minute pre-election concession. His original plan was to just sign the damn thing.
