Mr Shayler believes that there is an anagram of 'David Shayler, Righteous King' on the rod of Aaron, telling More4 News that:

"I looked at that, except the word in Hebrew for King was 'chav'. So at the moment I suddenly realised it goes David, S, H, A... I'm going though my name. And I'm thinking someone's trying to tell me, because this is the ineffable name of God, someone's trying to tell you you're God.

"And at the moment you suddenly realise that someone's trying to tell you you're God: David Shayler, righteous chav."

This is either a very long term assignment for Mr. Shayler, to infiltrate some of the kooky (and sometimes dangerous) cults around. Or the man has totally gone round the bend. Either way is good for MI5.

I read somewhere that he declared himself the “messiah”.

IIRC, the Bible warns of somebody who declares himself “messiah” but in fact turns out to be the antichrist devil in the flesh.

And the sad thing is, Alex Jones, who claims to be a Christian, gives this antichrist an open forum on his radio show and in his documentaries. If that doesn’t convince the world that Alex Jones and the rest of the Truthers (including “Pastor” Butch Paugh...hey, I can call myself a pastor, too, but it wouldn’t necessarily be truth) are fake Christians, then nothing will.
