I haven’t been able to find anything else that poor George can eat. He can have his equine senior but I can’t feed him enough for him to put on weight without causing a founder flare up. He has no grinding teeth left so he can’t eat hay or pasture. He was getting skinnier and skinnier and I was looking at putting another dang horse down so I had to do something. He can have beet pulp free choice so I give him tons and he’s gaining weight. I did get some wheat bran at the feed store today, per their suggestion, to add to the mix. They said no more than 2 cups a day. Do ya’ll know anything about wheat bran amounts? I don’t want to make him sick.
If it’s working keep doing it!
Don’t know about the wheat bran. What’s the goal with it?
I’ve never heard of giving horses wheat bran either, but I’d imagine that it’d be like any other grain and you’d want to be careful of the carbs in it if he’s got Cushings.
They do recommend flax seed meal though. It’s high in Omega-3 or Omega-6. I can never remember which. I give Tennessee about 2oz of that per day, which weighs out to be about a cup by volume, so he gets a half a cup at each feeding.
don’t know about wheat bran but Prez gets two scoops of beet pulp with his other food morning and night. He needs it for bulk and weight because he cannot have hay.
Endurance people use it because it helps hydrate their horses.
