Ah- well I couldn’t tell that they were that big! Cool! We don’t have them here.
Yeah, when I was leading them out of the pasture, Jackson and Kathryn were running around behind them screaming and I was screaming at them to get out from behind there or they were going to get their eyeballs kicked out. They kinda thought that was funny and then proceeded to scream "He's gonna kick my eyeballs out, he's gonna kick my eyeballs out!". It was so crazy it was comical at that point. And poor Goose didn't know whether to flip or fly and was dipping and dodging on the end of his lead, but he didn't totally freak out and he didn't try to kick, so that was good. I guess it was a good example of Total Sensory Overload. There were so many things go booger at that he didn't know which one to booger at first so he just didn't booger at all.
Oh, and one time I looked up and the 2yr old had climbed up the bars of the cattle trailer on the inside and was almost all the way to the top. I could just see the little bugger falling and bashing his brains out so I told him to get down, but before he could do it, the 7yr old tries to "help" him, and of course that leads to a wrestling match with the 7yr old trying to pry the 2yr old's death grip off of the bars and the 2yr old screaming bloody murder and I could just see him finally jerking him off of there and then dropping him so I told him to leave him alone until I could go and get his Daddy. But of course as soon as the 7yr old relented, the 2yr old promptly got down and then looked at me and said "Fall", and I said "Yeah, you'll fall if you get back up there" and he just grinned and happily toddled off. Kids are funny sometimes. ;o)
Your space, your rules :’)
Yeah, I guess I ought to follow that advice more often.
Given that it's only a matter of time before one of them gets his or her brains kicked out, I think I would have a serious talk with the parents and let them know that the kids cannot get near the horses again until they can behave.
You don't want to see one of them in the ICU with brain damage or dead. A friend of mine was kicked in the head by a horse as a teenager and was permanently brain damaged. She never graduated high school, and she will never marry, hold a job, or be able to live on her own.
I know it's a pain in the butt to have to tell their parents to rein in the kids, but if they ignore you, at least you've done what you could. At the very least it will help keep you from feeling too guilty if something happens.
I don't mean to come the heavy here, but I have seen up close and personal what can happen in a situation like this.
That's why I have a reputation around our barn for giving the little girls a "talking to" . . . and sometimes speaking to their moms as well.
Wild turkeys sure are bold -- they come and play all around the riding ring while we're having a lesson.
Yeah, but you’re absolutely right. I should rein them in more than I do but I guess I don’t want to cause hard feelings in the family for disciplining somebody else’s kids. People get real funny about that kinda thing. But of course there would REALLY be hard feelings if one of my horses did hurt one of their kids, so I guess I’m going to have to be a little tougher the next time.
I'm just thinking out loud here, but I think you need to formulate a plan of some sort and follow through. I guarandamtee you the parents will be blaming everybody but themselves (including you) if one of the kids gets hurt. "But you didn't say anything!" "Why didn't you tell us?"
Good food for thought.
Back from the vet.
She exrayed him this time. It’s not a shin splint but a bad bone bruise. It will heal, no lasting effects, but it will take longer to heal, then even a fracture would have. He just needs time. I’m suppose to start him on Foal Lac, and calcium supplement that will speed the healing, keep him penned up for another 10 days, then give him an hour or so of turn out a day with wraps on his legs. The wraps are to protect him from wacking himself again which she thinks he probably did and is why he was lame this weekend.
Becky
Huh... Interesting. How long, like a couple months?
Probably...we had this happen to another horse years ago...took forever...3-4 months.
Becky
The vet told me that she knows a lady looking for a horse just like Harley...trail horse that will lope the barrel pattern, good confirmation, and wants a palomino:)...
I told her to call the lady and tell her for the next two days I’d reduce my price if she took him as is. Since the vet is for certain he’ll recover from this, she said they just might take him. She had already told them about him, but didn’t know if I had sold him yet or not. She is going to call them tonight...crossing my fingers...I really don’t want to deal with him all winter like this.
It would also be a very good home...beautiful barn, beautiful trailer, etc. knowledge horse people, who would possibly also show him.
Becky
Well that’s good to know. It’s still a bummer that it’ll take so long to heal, but I guess all things have a purpose in the grand sceme of things and maybe the purpose of this was to hook you up with these other people who want a horse like Harley. So I’ll keep my fingers crossed that it’ll work out.
Well... that would be a good deal.
I’m curious though, why he should be penned. I can understand wrapped, but I’m not sure how it would be made worse with exercise, as long as he can control his own level of activity.
Not familiar with bone bruising, but would exercise really make it worse?
I'm guessing the thinking here is that he has re-injured himself, so the recommended rest might be to reduce any additional bruising that might be caused by increased blood flow to the injury site. Cold water soaks would probably help too, but I know what a pain in the butt that can be.
To tell the truth, I don’t really know what the reason is...she said something about keeping something in there from moving, but then she also said that blood flow will help...I’m really not sure tho.
Becky
Yeah, increased blood flow would help, after it’s had time to kinda heal a little bit, which is why I’m assuming she’s recommending the exercise after the 10 day rest period. But I wonder what it was that she was talking about wanting to keep from moving. Maybe all the tendons surrounding the bone that run up and down through there? Who knows. I guess that’s why they get paid the big bucks and we just get to nodd and say “OK” like we understand. ;o)
