Word For The Day, Thursday, August 2, 2007 - denouement
dictionaries ad nauseum, internet | 2 August 2007 | secret garden

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

denouement \day-noo-MAWN\, noun
1. The final resolution of the main complication of a literary or dramatic work.
2. The outcome of a complex sequence of events.

Example sentences:
And perhaps this helps to explain the frequency of the violent denouement in contemporary novels: in the country that embraced the slogan "Today is the first day of the rest of your life," how do you call it quits on a character who is still breathing?
-- Brad Leithauser, "You Haven't Heard the Last of This", New York Times, August 30, 1998

Of course, the crusaders were losers in the short run, but Europe's storytellers have traditionally awarded them the righteous victory and not dwelt on the embarrassing denouement.
-- Todd Gitlin, The Twilight of Common Dreams

Etymology:
Denouement is from French, from Old French denoer, "to untie," from Latin de- + nodare, "to tie in a knot," from nodus, "a knot."

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

I know French from HS and years of ballet. Frappe means to beat or strike. You can figure it out.

With luck, the denouement of abusive driver fees in Virginia is just around the corner.

Abusive driver fees declared unconstitutional

So far the declaration is in valid in 1 county, but the ruling is being appealed.

This man, a U.S. Marine, speaks eloquently of the denouement of the September 11th attacks.
You are going to love this video.

Home from work and getting ready to grill some shrimp-first ones in a long time-they have not looked very fresh or tasty in a while-

Obama’s idiotic statement
That he’d never use a nuke
Aside from being scary
Is enough to make me puke

And when someone nuked us
And made a major hit
Would he hurry to surrender
Or just pitch a hissy fit?

He wants to talk to Marxists
And play their little game-
The dénouement for his career
Would be to go down in flames

That guy is such a space cadet he can’t even buy a clue...

"Mik’s daughter just HAD to flip to the denouement of the latest Harry Potter novel to ascertain the fate of the protagonist."

NnB's daughter has finished the book. It might be my turn now.

"The premier denouement was the Great Bug Zapper Thread of April, 2007!"

"it was a good’un"

Aren't lobotomies supposed to make you feel better?
