Word For The Day, Thursday, August 2, 2007 - denouement
dictionaries ad nauseum, internet | 2 August 2007 | secret garden

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

denouement \day-noo-MAWN\, noun
1. The final resolution of the main complication of a literary or dramatic work.
2. The outcome of a complex sequence of events.

Example sentences:
And perhaps this helps to explain the frequency of the violent denouement in contemporary novels: in the country that embraced the slogan "Today is the first day of the rest of your life," how do you call it quits on a character who is still breathing?
-- Brad Leithauser, "You Haven't Heard the Last of This", New York Times, August 30, 1998

Of course, the crusaders were losers in the short run, but Europe's storytellers have traditionally awarded them the righteous victory and not dwelt on the embarrassing denouement.
-- Todd Gitlin, The Twilight of Common Dreams

Etymology:
Denouement is from French, from Old French denoer, "to untie," from Latin de- + nodare, "to tie in a knot," from nodus, "a knot."

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

I’ve been out of my parents for over twenty years and I still have stuff there. Every so often my mother will “remind” me that I only live fifteen minutes away and that I should really come get the stuff or at least let them know what can be thrown away, I tell her that I’m busy and will get to it later.

it is fun to rag on the Mountaineers. a Pitt football announcer had to resign after going on the PA system at a game in Pittsburgh against WVU where he said There is a tractor with it’s lights on in the parking lot, license plate # EIEIO. I LMAO every time i think of hearing that over a PA at a game!

i have been instructed that although xsteen is leaving for college in Dallas at the end of the month, her room is to be left untouched, as if a shrine... xsbrownie has already said she is taking over that bathroom, since she currently shares a bathroom with xsboy. daily i get emails from xsbrownie with links to new shower curtains and bedspreads etc. as she plans her redecoration!

It'd be more fun to beat them, but Pitt just can't do that.

LOL.......tioga daughter instructed me that anything she left behind could be tossed, it was ME who was too morose to change a thing.....she is due home tomorrow and it was looking bad. Ava’s crib is in there for naps, and I want to move her to a big girl bed soon - so I had to purge stuff. I saved what I wanted to. Her most beloved treasures she took with her. I figure since she bought herself a couch out there that the move may be permanent.

OMG the same cast of characters is on the thread with novak's piece about Jeri Thompson not being a trophy wife, with the same INSIPID BS about that ugly dress ! those church ladies drive me insane!

i guess i take it personally bc i can't swear there isn't some pic of me with cleavage in existence [not on the internet!!], and, like jeri, i am a lawyer and am taken seriously and would put my intellect and morals up against any single one of those shrews that deride her.

Cleavage looks GREAT on some women, not nearly as good on others and in any event doesn’t have anything to do with intellect.
