(SUV On CSU Lot Flips)

FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- A driver doing "doughnuts" in a parking lot near the Colorado State University campus was killed Wednesday night when his vehicle flipped and crashed.

The incident occurred at about 8 p.m. in the parking lot of CSU's Engines and Energy Conversion Laboratory.

A witness told the Fort Collins Coloradan that the driver pulled into the parking lot and then gunned the accelerator.

The driver was thrown from behind the wheel to the passenger side and then out the window, witnesses said. The vehicle flipped and partially rolled over the victim, a CSU spokesman said.

Three other people in the Ford Explorer were not hurt.

All of the occupants were in their late teens or early 20s. The victim has not been identified. Police are investigating whether drugs or alcohol played a role.

The 396/425 was known as “the rat motor.” It was a 427 in all but bore size, plus had mechanical lifters and a wonderful 3/4 race cam, fitted by Chevrolet. Actual horsepower was closer to 500 but this figure was toned down for insurance purposes. My 66 looked very much like “dad’s car.” Whitewalls, full hubcaps & full resonator muffler system. It was the perfect sucker bet for GTO Judges, street Hemis and Vetts. The only thing I couldn’t take was a particular 66 GTO 389 HP machine. Both cars were stock, running street tires. It was a kinder, gentler time...

C’mon, you never saw the Rockford Files? Jim would back up at high speed, whip the car around 180 degrees and take off forward in a hell of a hurry.

Jim Rockford was cool, did nearly all his own driving stunts.

Ok, got it. Yes he did, he raced a lot, I think with Paul Newman back then. He was a very good driver considering the stock camero he had to work with.

I admit to being a auto and driving fanatic ...but thank goodness, it's my only failing.

Does that mean I should stop blaming the SUV? You’re whittling down my choices here.

:) YEP! Blaming everything and everyone except the responsible party is too liberal minded. So sorry to limit your choices but it had to be done!

Maybe someone can start up a support group for unfairly stigmitized SUVs.

I learned the word from "The Defenestration of Irmatrude Inch" in Arthur C. Clarke's collection Tales From The White Hart.

Today’s seatbelts (with shoulder restraint) and safety-focused design of the interior (ignition key moved from the knee-impaling location on the dash to the steering column and steering wheels located further away from the driver) are DEFINITELY safer than the old seatbelts and, I believe, make your chances of surviving an accident far greater.

I always wear one and make others in my vehicle wear one.

I know I've never pushed mine quite that hard.

I'm surprised to see it on two points .. dirt roads must be a challange regardless the system

Well then you can look forward to “living a little.” Speed and momentum have everything to do with driving on dirt.

“I always wear one and make others in my vehicle wear one.”

I won’t move the car unless everybody’s belted.

My other toy hangs in there pretty well but is not an off road ride and I can't carry enough "stuff" in it

But at about 550 HP it's my second quickest
I love the X5 as my SUV and all around daily driver .
