Microsoft grows despite Windows Vista
The Register ^ | July 20th | Gavin Clarke

Not that you'd know it from Microsoft's results, or projected revenue, but the giant launched a brand-spanking new version of Windows this year.

Not only did Windows Vista - billed by Microsoft as its biggest operating system for 10 years - fail to distinguish Microsoft's latest fiscal year from previous, non-Windows-Vista years, but Microsoft also missed its own expectations by several million dollars.

The coming fiscal year looks little better.

Microsoft told Wall St it's reconciled to the fact the seven-year-old Windows XP will occupy more of the client revenue mix than Microsoft would have preferred, while revenue for the full year will grow less than the year just closed.

With the "wow" clearly failing to materialize in fiscal 2007, Microsoft was left to pronounce itself "broadly happy" - not blown away - with Windows Vista sales.

The sounds of chickens gently roosting could be heard on Thursday's call with Wall St analysts, coming - as the results did - after OEMs and component

Vista has been a great gift to the linux and mac crowds.

"If I'm gonna have to spend that much money to upgrade, why don't I just get a mac?"

"Why spend any money to upgrade, I'll no longer need a ram, processor, video, and/or hard drive upgrade if I just install linux."

I don’t know about Vista but we made a huge mistake when we upgraded last time. XP is the douchebaggiest system since those wooden square things that you slide beads back and forth on.

Just curious, what are you running?

My parents WinXP computer recently s**t the bed (it’s not even loading into Safe Mode) and Dad is on a real anti-Microsoft tear because of it. He asked me if he should switch to Mac or Linux. Thing is, I’m not sure either one would run his beloved AutoCAD without some real hoop-jumping.

Linux will run CAD programs without a hitch.

I have used VISTA and it is too complicated and too dissimilar to existing versions of Windows

Yep, it could be a stretch if you’re jumping from Win 3.1, I suppose.

Two possibilities, I suppose.

Dualbooting, or get a second hard drive/computer.

Use linux for everything except AutoCAD, keep one computer tucked away in the back away from an internet connection. Even an internet disabled windows machine is in danger of viruses, but you bring it to a very minimal level.

If you can afford a mac, more power to you. Want to trade lives for a day? :-)

I know there are linux CAD programs out there, but I don’t know the names.

For autocad specifically, you’ll need WINE.

When it comes to your major programs; such as AutoCAD; WINE is reported to work really well.

But that’s not speaking from personal experience. I live in a 100% microsoft-software-free zone.

Same here. I dropped Windows for Linux during the kids Christmas break and haven’t looked back. My husband is running WinXP cause he’s the gamer (Battlefield 2142, Star Wars Galaxies). I had to look up how to boot into Safe Mode on XP the other day while I had Dad on the phone because I had forgotten how to do it :)
