SENATOR BYRD: GIVE DOG FIGHTERS THE CHAIR!

Infamous around the beltway for his (rhetorical) fire, the always-cantankerous Senator Robert Byrd outdid himself on the Senate floor Thursday by saying he'd send a man involved in dogfighting to his death.

Byrd, 89, said he'd witnessed one execution in his life—a man put to death in the electric chair. "It's not a beautiful thing," he said. "I could say I could witness another one if it involves [long pause] ... this cruel, sadistic, cannibalistic, business of training these vulnerable creatures to kill."

The man who drove Byrd to new heights of apoplexy is Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick, who earlier this week was indicted on felony charges of competitive dogfighting, procuring and training pit bulls for fighting, and doing it all across state lines.

Byrd outlines what happens in a dogfight, punctuating his speech with shouts of "SHAME! SHAME! How inhuman! How dastardly!" And at one point he declared: "God created the dog to be man's companion."

"The fight can go on for hours," he added and repeated, "The fight can go on for hours. Hear me? [Shaking with fury.] The fight can go on for hours....

Who are the real animals? Who are the real animals? The creatures inside the ring? Or the creatures outside the ring? Barbaric. Barbaric! May god help those poor souls. Hear me."

I actually agree with the old coot on this one. While I wouldn’t advocate the death penalty for Vick, I wouldn’t be the least bit sad if somebody murdered him.

He went on for twenty five minutes? How many times did he crap himself and drool oatmeal down his chin?

If it’s true that the good die young, then Sheets is practically immortal.

It’s in fact quite hypocritical for Byrd to call out Vick on the alleged charges.

Byrd served as “Exalted Leader” and “kleagle” of the KKK — an organization that regularly held dogfights; using them as a fundraising activity. As late as the early 1930’s the Klan chapters regularly publicized the dogfights until public pressure forced them to go underground.

I’m not saying Byrd conducted, attended or even supported dogfights. But as a former leader of an organization that was the main proponent of dogfights for decades in America, denigrating someone who allegedly particpated in this activity seems hypocritical.

Hypocrisy is the middle name of liberals.

I suspect ol’ Sheets’ outrage is based on Vick’s race, not the crime. While despicable a crime, why is he not outraged at abortion?

Nor would I be the least bit saddened if the dogfighters’ dogs attacked them and ripped their throats out.
