Infamous around the beltway for his (rhetorical) fire, the always-cantankerous Senator Robert Byrd outdid himself on the Senate floor Thursday by saying he'd send a man involved in dogfighting to his death.
Byrd, 89, said he'd witnessed one execution in his life—a man put to death in the electric chair. "It's not a beautiful thing," he said. "I could say I could witness another one if it involves [long pause] ... this cruel, sadistic, cannibalistic, business of training these vulnerable creatures to kill."
The man who drove Byrd to new heights of apoplexy is Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick, who earlier this week was indicted on felony charges of competitive dogfighting, procuring and training pit bulls for fighting, and doing it all across state lines.
Byrd outlines what happens in a dogfight, punctuating his speech with shouts of "SHAME! SHAME! How inhuman! How dastardly!" And at one point he declared: "God created the dog to be man's companion."
"The fight can go on for hours," he added and repeated, "The fight can go on for hours. Hear me? [Shaking with fury.] The fight can go on for hours....
Who are the real animals? Who are the real animals? The creatures inside the ring? Or the creatures outside the ring? Barbaric. Barbaric! May god help those poor souls. Hear me."
Ole Byrd was 3 white sheets to the wind last yesterday.

Maybe Byrd wants to lynch Michael Vick, something he ought to be familiar with from his bygone years. Ahhh...how sad to see a old man trying to re-live his youth!

He might have been s-l-o-w on his speech, but I agree with him! Dogfighting is barbaric, and so are those people who train dogs to do it. If only he had this passion for fighting terrorists and winning in Iraq.

I agree, when a democrat is right we ought to support him.
Let them get in line behind pedophiles, and anyone else who kills humans.
Let them get in a tandem line and off them side by side. A cleansing of this garbage on a wholesale and ongoing basis will only help the nation that has lost it way and is in paralysis as to executing those that need killing.

Absolutely agree! Cruel and inhumane to the nth degree and this guy needs to go down big time for it. I'm grateful that the spotlight is being put on the gritty reality of dogfighting and hope that this is a catalyst to real reform in our laws and courts to rid our nation of such a shameful 'pastime'!

Byrd got this one right. Dogfighting is barbaric. The slaughter of our unborn children is even more barbaric, but he’s still right about dogfighting. I can’t believe Vick hasn’t been suspended by the NFL yet.
