Personally I prefer a high batting average to a slugger any day. Right now the major league hitter is Magglio Ordonez.

Given that so many are using, Barry’s record makes sense to me in the context of the time/era that he played in.

Of course it does. And as we've said a hundred times before steroids do nothing to improve a hitter's eye or coordination - the worst that can be said is steroids helped Bonds stay off the disabled list longer than he otherwise would have.

They can hate him all they want - he's still the greatest hitter of his era. Ted Willams was a complete jerk, too. It just disturbs me to see so many FReepers eagerly lining up with Bonds's real enemies: the Keith Olbermann-like liberal twit sportswriters of the world.

Every since they have made ball parks smaller has changed the nature of the game.

Comerica park takes the wind out of their home run sails.

Seems to me that most folks have concluded that a lot, if not a majority, of players are using

And it's further interesting to note that MLB is doing nothing about this perception, nor about Bond's open steroid use. Guess they're waiting for a Benoit-like incident, or for MLB to be openly equated with WWE. By then, it will be too late.

Between this and the Michael Vick thing, FIE on pro sports at all levels.

One can certainly debate the significance of Aaron's record (times at bat, games, etc) but Bonds is a punk and I could certainly understand if Aaron was as p*ssed as all get out by Bonds' record.

Why is this Bonds even allowed to remain in baseball? he's a punk.

Personally I'm not buying it. Too many baseball positions require flexibility more than strength. There are other perfomance enhancing drugs in sports. Neifi Perez is suspended for 25 games due to some type of banned stimulant found during a screen.

The big home run hitters are another matter. They can obviously hit but roids provide power.

The Bonds Slump (Patent Pending) broke early because nothing is at stake just now.

I’m not sure what baseball can do about it now except move forward. Barry, with little doubt, did use steroids but it has not been proved. There is nothing they can do about the past. Can’t suspend a guy for something you can’t prove.

Stricter testing? Well, they will have to deal with the player’s union with that. MLB management doesn’t have to power... it is shared with the players. Even so, testing is no guarantee that all will be caught. The fans will have to vote with their feet and right now they don’t. The Giants have sold out 19 times this year.

Opposing team’s fans hate Barry but they show up in huge numbers to watch. They all boo when he comes to the plate but snap pictures when he swings the bat.

We can all gripe about steroids but I don’t see serious action to change things. I think Bud just wishes everyone (mainly sports writers) would stop talking about it.

Being a punk doesn’t exclude one from playing baseball. Ask any Boston fan about Manny.

The hate Barry brings is something that every owner loves. He puts butts in the seats and that is what keeps owners happy.

I know that there are punks in all walks of life. But Bonds' "punkdom" is about as detrimental to the game as was/is that of Peter Rose.

Aaron was the greatest hitter of all time. Take away his 755 home runs and he still has over 3,000 hits for his career!!!

Aaron did it clean and with class.

Yes, his is a horse’s rear end. I can understand his hatred of the press. I hate the press too. As most folks in the political world know, the press has nothing to do with truth or fairness only spin and a reporter’s self and ideological promotion. If I were Barry, I wouldn’t talk to the press either. That being said, I wish he would be a little nicer to his own fans. He doesn’t participate in meet-and-greets with the fans. He is not known for signing balls, etc during pregame or in spring training. Granted, he might be fearful of rabid fans but he should have a little balance. Not everyone is out to hurt him. Some 6 yr old kid isn’t going to hurt anyone, especially the ones at AT&T park. They are the kids of SF Giants fans. Then again, he probably signs stuff for kids only to see it on Ebay that night. That would piss me off too. Not everyone can be as nice as say, JT Snow, but Bonds should try to be a little more engaging with his own base. We will see if he continues to show up to Giant’s games after he retires.

That's exactly my point. MLB is not remotely interested in doing anything about it. This sets such a bad example for young people, who will receive the message (again!) that it's ok to do anything to succeed, including juicing, thus continuing (maybe accellerating) this downward spiral in pro sports, especially football and baseball.

I thought I'd never say this, but if I had children who wished to compete in sports, I would only allow golf and tennis. It's hard to compete there when juiced or speeding.

Against pitchers like Koufax, Drysdale and Gibson, too.

I’m not so sure those sports are safe either. I heard a story on NPR the other day regarding golf and steroids. It appears that some golfers are using beta-blockers if not steroids
http://www.amateur-golf.com/news/yeartodate/news2001/drugs.html

Also, roids aren’t just about getting bigger, they are about quicker recovery after practice/game or match. Tennis and golf could easily ‘benefit’ from roids.

This is from a good article on ESPN:
“The notion that there aren’t any steroids in golf is incredibly naive,” Yesalis says. “Steroids work. There’s too much money in the sport, and you can manage the steroids the right way, without serious side effects. You can certainly make the argument that the benefits outweigh the risks. What reasonable person thinks that athletes in any sport — golf included — aren’t doing it?”
http://sports.espn.go.com/golf/news/story?id=2239115

McEnroe now admits that he was “unaware” that he had been taking steroids for 6 years during his career.

Roids are everywhere. Heck when I was in high school 20+ yrs ago there were people on roids.

And it impacts YOUR life HOW to be there when the very unpleasant and surly posterboy for steroids hits a few more out of the park?

Jeezzz. Some folks really DO need to get lives.

What a whiner you are.

Technically he’s three shy. He is at 753 and two more would tie. At least the last time I checked (about 10 minutes ago). Did I miss one?
