I had a kitten once that was hit by a car. I probably should have put it down. Instead, I spent three months nursing it and about $4,000 on vet bills. Makes me wonder who is paying this vet bill. Taxpayers?

The article mentioned the vet surgeon was pro bono. I imagine many of the other bills are the same. They also mentioned taking up a local collection.
Reporters always put down what these services WOULD have cost, if the doctors and nurses had actually charge for them. I would imagine the true cost is very low - just medical supplies and medicine. The vet surgeon bill would alone been in the thousands and she is donating that time and expense. Most of the rest is probably free too.
