Teen Girls Accused Of Setting Kitten Ablaze.

COTATI, Calif. -- A three-month-old kitten is fighting for his life after allegedly being set afire by two teenage girls last week.

The male shorthaired kitten, named Adam, received second- and third-degree burns over 75 percent of its body and was being treated at an animal hospital in Cotati, in Northern California's Sonoma County, officials said.

The kitten has undergone two surgeries and had its tail and the tips of its ears amputated.

Two girls have been charged with cruelty to animals in connection with the case. They were arrested last Friday after allegedly pouring flammable liquid on the cat, only 8 weeks old at the time and setting it on fire.

A boy and his friend said they saw the smoke and heard the cat shrieking while the girls laughed.

The girls are being held in Sonoma County's Juvenile Hall. The maximum penalty carried by the charges against them is three years of confinement.

They ARE in CA where animal’s lives are usually placed FAR above human lives. In this incident, I hope they are made an example and slapped with a severe punishment.
Doubtful since they are juvies.

The poor cat should be put down IMO.
It is suffering.

Sociopaths have been around for a LONG time...there's nothing really new and exciting there, except that on a slow news day we SEE and HEAR about it more due to modern technology

Evil, and evil people...same thing...there is nothing new under the sun...only now I can see it all on the news on my plasma TV.

Harry Potter has NOTHING to do with this thread. I seen the latest movie with my wife this past weekend. It is nothing less than a fictional story meant to entertain. It has no bearing on my relationship with God or the condition of my soul.

Kids can be very cruel.

Don't I know it. Many years ago at church camp we had a torturer. He would pull all the legs off of crayfish in the camp stream, smash any bug he saw, good or bad and toss anything that moved and wasn't human into the campfire just to watch it die. When we discovered him about to do his mojo with a box turtle, my friend and I had seen enough and roughed him up but good.

A bit hypocritical, I suppose. But he stopped his crap.

He’ll be fine and live a healthy and safe life to the right owner. Trust me.

A big BUMP to that! I didn't see this thread until this morning, but saw the photo on Drudge last night. How sad and heart wrenching. If I were the father of one of these girls, I would probably kill her. There's just no excuse for animal cruelty - period. I don't care if the person doing this is 14 or 40. They were old enough to know what they were doing, of course.

Are they doing better than advances in human medicine?

Human burns are hard enough to treat. What makes it any better for animals? They feel pain and pain killers are limited in what they can do for it. Not to mention that the amount of fur on their skin is going to complicate treatment and recovery and increase risk of infection. Do they not still have to scrub out the burn daily like they do with people, which causes them to scream in pain?

IMO, the only reason not to put down a *being* that has been that badly injured is because the being is human and killing a human is murder. The kitten is still just an animal, regardless of how attached people become to them, and inflicting that much more suffering on it in the name of *saving* it, if that can even be done, is unconscionable, in my book.

All that time and effort could be donated to other worthy veterinary causes.

I don’t know. I’ll defer to the vets on this one. My experience with vets is that they love animals. I’ve had cats all my life and the vets I use truly care about the animals they treat and I don’t think most vets would let an animal they were trying to save truly suffer.

Well, had we done that I'd be typing this from a jail cell.

As it was, we had to be careful not to leave any obvious marks. The Bretheren Church that owned the camp took a pretty dim view of using force to solve problems.

What would posses someone to do this?

Fear. Find out what they are afraid of, and you'll have the answer. I wouldn't be surprised if there is physical or psychological abuse somewhere in their past.

“Possess” (or “possessed”) is probably the operative word here.

Late term infanticide is

AT LEAST AS BAD.

God’s perspective means more to me than that of other mortals.

Please don’t be jealous or bitter of other peoples feelings of campassion for an animal. I’m sure God would want you to feel bad for both.

Why save it? Because they can and because it is the right thing to do. This poor animal was tortured by two deviants. By saving him, these doctors and people demonstrate caring and compassion for others to take note of and hopefully emulate.

Well said! If this had happened to an animal of mine, IF I had the funds to save it, I would do that as well. And then spend it's life loving it passionately to heal the emotional wounds. I've rescued many abused critters and I've never ever been sorry. Some take months to recover, some bounce back in a few weeks of loving care and some take years ... but they ALL without exception become loving, trusting, wonderful companions. God sees. God remembers. And God both rewards and punishes.

I say we all send letters to the juvenile court where these girls are being held and ensure that a massive public outcry is heard loud and clear!!

Several of you mentioned that you felt that this behavior is an early indication of violence towards humans. You are dead right about this. I belong to an organization called The Arizona Humane LINK Coalition. You can visit our website here: http://www.thehumanelink.com/

The following statement is from the website:

We are a multidisciplinary coalition that boasts representation from key components of the community who link together toward a common goal. Our objective is to raise awareness and demonstrate intervention strategies leading to a more comprehensive understanding of the connection between animal abuse and other, escalating forms of human violence. In particular, we support human-animal bond based interventions that have a demonstrated, positive impact on breaking ‘the link’ between animal abuse and human violence.

I never could understand the mentality like that, all the while letting a little sadist like that go unchecked.

I see that a lot in churches. Some bully torments some little kid and everyone is expected to be forgiving and forgive the bully, but he's never brought into line, or even chastised. Then you see him standing there smirking while the other kid is told how bad he is for being unforgiving.

Of course evil has been around a long time.

Otherwise, your perspective is not my construction on reality.

Time will tell.

NO doubt about Harry Potter. Scripture is abundantly clear in it’s prohibition regarding anything to do with witchcraft.

Satan is happy to use fiction to facilitate true demonic infections.

Evidently your experience with such matters is considerably less than mine. How many exorcisms have you participated in? How many have you led? How many have you even watched?

Who said anything about being

jealous or bitter of other peoples feelings of compassion for an animal. ???

I’m all for compassion toward animals. I’ve shown plenty in my life and still do. Am grieving now over a neighbor calling the pound on a stray dog that had a sweet disposition but we couldn’t take responsibility for.

My hostility is toward those who think late term or any other infanticide is quite OK—business as usual—convenient!!!

Well, in their defense, the little monster was sneaky. I'm fairly sure the staff never saw him do anything. On the other hand, we didn't dare mention it to them because it would have opened us up to accusations of "bearing false witness", which would have been a Bad Deal. We were on thin ice already for bringing some tiny toy spaceships (this was right after Star Wars) that someone had narked out as "war toys".
