Since launch, people have been ticked off about the battery's 300-400 charge rating, which will cost roughly $80 to replace. OK, but this is an iPod, you should not be surprised. The real battery issue is that many of the units are running far below rated capacity on day one. My phone only had 40% left after 4 hours of light to moderate use; the statistically significant evidence is that I personally know four other journalists, in different parts of the country, with this problem. Apple took the best care of me, as a customer and my second unit was better. Waiting for the bad batteries to shake out of the stockrooms could be key here.

This is the only thing that Apple has to worry about.

Not too much... at the 300-400 charge rating, the battery will only then start to decline in capacity. It's still good for probably a couple more hundred charge cycles. With a 2-3 day usage cycle between charges unless you are using it 9 hours a day, that means that the iPhone's battery should last between 600 and 1200 days before needing replacement.

$80 to replace.

That works out to between 1.33¢ to 0.7¢ per day in battery cost over the life of the batter.

Hopefully.

Heard of rumours about a mini iPhone? It’s on engadget.

Love the last icon... “Paris Hilton News Blocker”...

Actually, I think you can do that on the iPhone...

Yeah... but I don't give it much credibility. I don't think Apple would undermine the iPhone with an iPhone light quite so soon... especially one with a much smaller screen and a iPod wheel control.

I guess so too...

And besides, making that kind of phone on a package as slim as the Nano might actually end up being more expensive to make than the iPhone is, right now.

SwordMaker, I just mailed you something about it. :') Not bad for someone who isn't interested in the iPhone, eh?

Is there anything that you think can’t be fixed?

Yes. Rosie O’Donnell’s vagina.

Isn’t interested? You’re crazy, that’s what you are! Lol!

Sometimes, when something is made very well, minor flaws appear to be magnified. Especially delibrate, expensive ones.

Are you trying to tell me you would’ve hated the iPhone if it had an accessible battery?!!

I have used Apple products (like this one I’m using now) since early 1984 (Apple IIe, Schaak Electronics, both are long gone now). I’ve never had an iPod or been interested in one, and don’t regard a phone as an alternative lifestyle, so I won’t be getting an iPhone. :’) I didn’t mention the battery, but I regard it as a good idea that the battery can’t come loose.

Lol!

And as for this, “...but I regard it as a good idea that the battery can’t come loose...” you will hate that part of the design when you wish you could carry extra battery packs for use during long journeys, or replace the battery as the holding capacity of the Li-ion battery starts to fall- technically from the first charge-discharge cycle itself. The Apple design now makes what would have costed ten bucks to do, 75+ bucks. And then there is the deal of physical defects coming on the phone by the actual prying-open of the phone to access the battery. This, unless Apple will be supplying a fresh case each time the battery is changed.

Finally, have you ever had a cellphone lock-up, which you revive by doing a cold-restart? Essentially removing the battery, waiting a few minutes, and putting it back again to switch the phone on again...

What does that mean, to have a cell phone lock up? I’ve never experienced anything that comes to mind. Of course, I’ve only had two cell phones, and only used them for about five years.

The phone becomes unresponsive... just like in a computer, when it hangs. It rarely happens to older basic phones, with most of the features almost hard-wired, but happens quite frequently with ones that have a programmed OS running the phone and built on software to emulate features that older phones used hardware circuitry for.
