On July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was adopted.

History trivia: Actually, the Declaration was adopted on July 3, 1776. John Adams was ecstatic, proclaiming that July 3rd would henceforth be rung in with church bells and fireworks, but he was wrong.

Because the Declaration was announced on the morning of the 4th, that date has become the holiday.
