PING
Unfortunately, although homosexuality is not inborn, except perhaps in some extremely rare cases where there is merely a slight physical proclivity toward it, it is deeply ingrained. Just as our own preferences are ingrained. The constant physical reward that sex provides establishes a deep preference that is intertwined with emotion and is not easily changed. When it is changed, there tends to be a lack of passion afterwards. You are psychoanalyzed, you are cured, you no longer care, in that order. Happens with all neuroses connected to sex, in fact.
BUT, Rushbo, I do think you are correct to repeatedly emphasize how fruited the plain has become. It is quite a phenomenon.
I think the same could be said for: why not defective [insert whatever]. This is a very complex subject.
Ex-gays tell us their same-sex attraction wasn't a choice because they were confused. Science tells us environment plays a major factor and when reading story after story from ex-gays, we see environment playing a large part.
Some admit to choosing homosexuality. There's the Queer By Choice group, some radicals admit to choosing the lifestyle and state they need to recruit more, there are LUGS (Lesbian Until Graduation), etc.
I admittedly haven't been a FReeper for that long, but I've seen very few postings I could point to that were pro-homo.
Mostly seems to be anti- i.e.comments like, 'fudge-packers, 'rump riders', etc, etc, etc...
It's a cyclical thing. There are some posters with a well-established reputation for posting "not that there's anything wrong with that" when the question arises. Others will sign in for the first time and go traipsing through a bunch of threads talking about how evil we all are for suggesting that the turd burglars are anything other than perfectly normal, happy, well-adjusted folk.
'turd burglars'! *LOL*!!
Have to add that one to the list...
I understand our president’s new surgeon general nominee has written extensively on the physiological damage resulting from a gay deathstyle.
I DID state in my post that many NOW (especially) are “choosing” to be gay. Some probably by osmosis of being forced into homo situations as children.
You state: “I think the same could be said for: why not defective [insert whatever].”
Exactly!
Retardation and many diseases including heart defects (I mean, FROM BIRTH) are genetic defects that show up from the get-go. Why cannot homosexuality be so?
Occasional homosexuality seems to occur out in nature.
Saying this does NOT condone homosexuality.
Just as retardation nor faulty heart problems are not only abnormal, but not “celebrated” as something to aspire to, neither is homosexuality (or shouldn’t be). Just because “it happens” doesn’t mean it’s a good thing. Thus, conservatives should not be so shy about it being an abnormality that sometimes crops up. I don’t understand this.
What I meant by "why not defective..." was that same-sex attraction could be the result of a defective environment as well, and that's what science is telling us. There have been many studies giving the false impression of genetics as the cause behind same-sex attraction. Some of those are finger length, eye color, twins, direction of curly hair, hypothalamus, etc, all of which have been discredited.
While we do sometimes see same-sex attraction in nature, it's always a temporary situation or domination is the major factor. What unfortunately happens is somebody reads a headline only never to read the study nor the follow-up comments, and that's critical to understanding the bigger picture here.
Sometimes I'll remind folks that homosexuals are people, too, and that we shouldn't paint with such a wide brush. When I do that it gives others the impression I'm condoning homosexuality when I'm not.
Check my profile for numerous links on the subject.
Your expert literally sells the service of turning gays straight, and refers to it as “doing God’s work”.
I don’t know, call me a skeptic, but... I’m kind of looking for more in an “expert”.
The number of ex-gays might be “growing”, but it seems to experience “shrinkage” quite often as well.
Whatever... if people want to change, best of luck to them. IMO, it isn’t a “choice”.
Scripter, I had never heard of Dr. Socarides, and I looked him up in Wikipedia.
You probably already know this, but his son is gay.
Irony.
Shrinkage. It’s a real issue.
Now here's why I think so MANY guys are gay......FEMINIST MOTHERS and DIVORCED MOTHERS...weak or no father figures.
There are many experts in the field. Some believe homosexuals can change. Some say it's damaging to even try. Some say homosexuals are born that way, so there's a wide range of ideas out there.
Ex-gays say their same-sex feelings aren't a choice and I believe them. They do say their actions are always a choice and I believe them here as well. I also believe them when they talk about the sexual identify confusion they experienced while they had their same-sex-attraction.
Here's something you may find of interest: Confession from a former homosexual.
Who knows. Maybe Socarides’ work kept him from home and his first son missed that bond. Maybe not. Maybe having a gay son drove him to excel in his work.
“...Excellent article. Needs to be widely read here on FR....”
Not only here on FR but everywhere.
Retardation and many diseases including heart defects (I mean, FROM BIRTH) are genetic defects that show up from the get-go. Why cannot homosexuality be so?
If the root cause is congenital, being a mental defect would still fall in line with the idea that homosexuality is chosen.
It’s telling that homosexuals claim to be born that way, but they are constantly in the process of recruitment.
BUMP!
