Did you hear Paul Harvey yesterday? He told about a guy who had sent 13 different books out to 13 different publishers and all of the books were turned down? They were all Jane Austen's books! He had changed the title and that was all. He was running an experiment. 1 day left!!!!

No, I didn't, but that doesn't surprise me. Publishing houses are just nuts with what they think will sell. Remember, it took JKR 6 years to get SS published in the UK, and then they only ran 50,000 copies! It wasn't until the Scholastic guy bought it and brought it here that it took off. I don't read most mainstream fiction, Oprah book club type stuff. Most of it is just crap. Except Cormac McCarthy's The Road. Good Lord, that man can write, even though Oprah picked it. Sometimes she gets it right. I think fantasy and mystery publishers are much more interested in a well written novel, like George R.R. Martin and Martha Grimes. Beautiful writers.

I’m pleased for him. My daughter would love to do something like that, but she doesn’t really have the programming skills.

the Istari (wizards) were required to assume mortal forms. This mortal form did indeed die as a result of the confrontation with the Balrog, but Gandalf was rejuvenated and reformed, this time with the authority of the head of the order of the Istari, given Saruman's treachery.

Ok, I see. Thanks for the explanation. I'm a Tolkien fanatic but I'm not that good on the "geeky" stuff. I should read the green books stuff on TORN more. Using your explanation on JKR's statement that DD is not going to "do a Gandalf" we would have to give up any idea of DD coming back as a phoenix or an inanimate object, or coming back at all, because she would have precluded the idea of him coming back in another form. But I don't think she would have that understanding of what happened to Gandalf. I've been reading Tolkien, both JRR and Christopher, for 30 years and I didn't understand it. She's only read the book once and doesn't consider herself a fan. So I think she meant DD is not going to be found to have somehow escaped death. I'm still hanging on to the phoenix idea... at least until tomorrow!

I was thinking Ollivander went missing because Voldemort’s and Harry’s wands were brothers and therefore won’t work against each other properly. I was thinking that would be something Voldemort would want either fixed, changed or whatever.

I don't think so. But whether Olivander was taken by the DE's or hidden by the OOP I imagine there will be a specific explanation for it. Certainly, Olivander has information about individual wizards that no one else has.
In the ceremony at the graveyard LV made a point of showing that he could touch Harry without pain. And during the Ministry fight it was very clear that Harry was totally outmatched. In fact, in DD hadn't intervened it might have been all over for Harry right there. LV doesn't need his wand to face Harry. So far in the books, it seems to me, getting a new wand is not something easily done. When Ron broke his wand he had to tape it and use it all year until it was mended (I don't remember who mended it right now). Neville just got a new wand as a reward for passing his OWLS, but I don't remember anyone else getting a new wand. I'm just saying it's not something JKR has set up as an obvious possibility.
One thing I got out of HBP when I re-read it last week is something I haven't heard anyone talking about. It has come out that Tom Riddle is a half-blood. But the Death Eaters are all about being pure bloods and wiping out the half-bloods. I think the DE's are running wild and carrying out their own agenda without too much direction from LV, and they certainly don't know about their leader's parentage. Lupin indicated that the OOP was hiding people they knew to be in danger from the DE's. DD told Draco they could hide him and his mother very well if he changed sides. So I'm really hoping we'll find out that many of the people who were reported missing, in HBP at least, will turn out to be alive and well. BTW, I'm so with you on your tagline!

Ron could have easily gotten a new wand, except he was in disgrace. His parents bought him a new wand the next school year.

Neville got a new wand because his (Which had been his father’s) was broken during the fight at the Ministry.

People also use other people’s wands all the time. Tom Riddle used Harry’s in COS, Barty Crouch Jr. used Harry’s in GOF, Neville used Hermione’s in OOP.

The wand itself isn’t usually very important, except in Voldemort’s and Harry’s case, of course.

Yeah, I noticed that. So what's the point of all the "wand chooses the wizard" shtick?

(Bill wonders, too.)

I think that you can do better magic with the proper wand, as it focuses the power better.

And I just finished HFP.

Yay!!

Leaving in 25 minutes to get Deathly Hallows.

Happy Reading everyone!!

Exciting fight at the end. Nuff said, I’m going to bed.

Your hold queue position is: 679

I was over 1,000 last time I looked. Some people must have cancelled their hold requests and paid for the book :-).

I thought about getting on the (shorter) list for Large Print, but I'm afraid it would be too big for me to lift!

I’m in line for the taped book as well as the large print! :) And yes I’m pumping iron to help my ability to hold the book. LOL

I’m on the list for the CD version; my library doesn’t seem to have ordered a cassette book. I’m getting a new CD player for my birthday!

I like to read when I’m walking on the treadmill, so there’s only so heavy a book can be without throwing my back out.

I finished the book about an hour ago and jumped right online to read all the stuff I avoided yesterday. LOL!

It really was just as good as I'd hoped it would be.

Don’t know.

I just got a book in the mail from Amazon; my husband ordered it for my birthday.

Our local Wal-mart had plenty of copies left. A number of people were sneaking around the store reading them :-).

There isn't one...yet. I figure most people are either still reading, or sleeping.
