Ugh, Gambon drives me nuts! Harris was exactly how I pictured Dumbledore, Gambon acts surprised or angry all the time. I still wish the guy who played Gandalf in LOTR had taken the role or the bald guy who played in the new star treks.(can’t think of either one’s names.)

It’s my favorite book for those reasons as well. Fudge always made me think of Clinton denying that any terror was taking place.

I have been listening to the tape of OOTP(Jim Dale’s voice and how he portrays the characters is amazing) and just got to the pond scene. That is one of the best scenes in the book. I also like when the centaurs charge Umbridge and Ron makes the clipclopping sound from his bed to scare her. :)

Patrick Stewart was the actor in “Star Trek.” He’d have been an interesting Dumbledore, no doubt.

I’ve been needing something to listen to on the treadmill, and nothing has interested me for a while. (Meaning I haven’t been running :-( ...

I believe I’ll pick up a HP tape set at the library tomorrow; there’s bound to be at least one on the shelf, even with the interest generated by the upcoming releases. Most people get CDs these days instead of cassette, anyway, but I just have a tape player.

Ian McKellan was Gandalf, and Patrick Stewart was Captain Picard. Your post was SO great because I have said the exact same thing to my hubby so many times! (He said I don’t need to say it EVERY single time we watch Gambon, but, well, I can’t help myself, LOL!)

I hope you can get them, if you haven’t heard Dale’s readings you will be so pleasantly surprised. I enjoy the readings of the books even more than the movies. :) He has all the characters down to a t.

LOL! I don’t know why they chose Gambon. He even looks funny in the beard(wears it like it’s a fake! :) I know that McKellan was their first choice, but he was busy with the Fellowship of the rings, but Stewart would have been perfect for the role!!! At least he can act.

Is he really? I never noticed! He acts so tall! ;) Even being short don’t you think he could at least wear the beard better than Gambon? Seriesly, on Gambon it looks fake! It drives me nuts. :)

Sounds great. I hope he has some volume, because it can be hard to hear over the sound of pounding feet :-).

5’6” or so, iirc, but that can be worked around with camera angles :-). Patrick Stewart had a long beard as King Lear and looked realistic.

Hair, too, of course ... although he’s so attractive without hair that I think they could rewrite Dumbledore as a bald character ...

The height issue can be remedied. But Stewart, at least, would have projected the inner calmness, humor, and kindness of Dumbledore that Gambon totally lacks.

I never thought Richard Harris was exceptionally tall, even when I saw him onstage in “Camelot” (one of my favorite theater experiences, ever).

I’m waiting for “Romulus” Lupin to show up.

Keep waiting. Rowling has already said that there is no "Romulus Lupin".

Yes, Patrick Stewart would be a much better Dumbledore than this current one. I think the producers must have decided to downplay the adult characters’ influence on the teens. From a movie standpoint, it’s not a big deal, but it’s a gravitational shift from the books.

I can’t picture Richard Harris’s height at all, because he’s such a large dramatic presence.

What would be cool is that when she dies, his parents come out of their madness.

It'd be nice, but that would be a little too easy. I think she really did drive them mad. It isn't a spell. A spell would've (should've) been countered in all those years, even if they just forced her to undo it.
