Calling All Cooks for Crock Pot Chilli

Posted on 06/27/2007 12:44:47 PM PDT by Lost Dutchman

Sorry for the vanity but I need Freeper Help!!!

Since I just arrived from Phoenix AZ to Maine last year my family wants me to bring a crockpot chili to the reunion on Sat Jun 30th. They also added the stipulation that is should be in a crockpot (to keep it warm) and mild (so everyone can eat it)

I have made chili before, (long time ago) but it has never been either crockpot nor mild, and I don't think they will be willing to try anything else.

Any help would be appreciated...

Thanks...

Lost Dutchman aka Sean O.

Yikes.. I didn't think the poster wanted anything close to real, considering they didn't want any heat, peppers, or spicy.. I figgered it was Wolf Brand or a faux chili.. I'm going to hold you to that sample of Zoo Chili.. :)

OK - you're right, so I rescind my criticism of your post :)

We'll work something out on the zoo chili, but as I said, it's probably going to be a while. The weather is supposed to break int he next 24-48 hours and as soon as it does I have 30 quarts of strawberries to turn into jam and another 100 or so chili pepper plants to get in the ground, as well as more corn, tomatoes, eggplant, watermelon, cantelope, etc., etc., etc.........oh, and did I mention weeding? Lots of weeding goes on in a 10,000 sq ft garden :)

I don't see where I'll be making any chili before Labor Day, and most likely not before Columbus Day.

Meat, tomatoes, onions, cumin, salt, pepper. You pick the proportions. Brown the meat hard in a cast-iron frying pan first. Start it cooking the day before.

After Action Report:

I eventually went with 4lbs of Hamburger,
3lbs of Beans,
2lbs of Button Mushroom Stems & Slices,
1lb of stewed tomatoes,
1lb of Mild Salsa,
1/2lb chili sauce,
“LOTS” of Cumin,
“Some” Chili Powder,
“A Little” garlic, and
2cups of water.

I slow crocked it for 8hrs, then used the last 2hrs on high to boil off the excess water.

Tabasco, Shredded Sharp Cheddar, and Sour Cream were served on the side...

Compliments were given all around. The only feedback I was given was to add more garlic and include onions next time. Believe it or not, everyone LOVED the mushrooms.

Thanks for all the help Freepers!!!

There's actually a name for this type of dish: Cinncinati chili
